At a glance

  • The Grand Place feels different by day and in the evening. If you’re staying nearby, it’s worth seeing twice.
  • Treat waffles and chocolate as a little break during your walk, not a meal replacement.
  • If you’re planning a day trip to Bruges or Ghent, keep your first day in Brussels short and easy.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Morning or early afternoon after arrival

Start with a walk around the Grand Place and the Royal Galleries. Events or construction may change access, so check the city’s official event information before you arrive.

Afternoon

If you’re visiting the Brussels City Museum, first choose an available time on its official booking page. If you skip the museum, take a walk between Sablon and Mont des Arts instead.

Around sunset

Visit the Grand Place again only if it’s a short trip from your accommodation. If you arrive late, see the square and galleries, then plan an indoor visit for the next day.

How to fit it in

This works well for the afternoon you arrive in Brussels or the first day of your Belgium trip.

Reality check

Transport

Walk from Brussels Central Station to the Grand Place, then continue on foot through the Royal Quarter along the hill. If you have luggage, sort out a station locker first.

Time

Set aside 7–9 hours for the square and side streets (2 hours), a museum (2–3 hours), meals, and an evening visit.

Cost

The square and Mont des Arts are free. Make one museum and one meal your main paid activities, and set a spending limit for chocolate and beer shopping.

Safety

Wear your bag in front of you around Central Station and in busy streets. Late at night, use well-lit squares and main streets instead of quiet side streets.

If plans change

If heavy rain continues

Take a short look at the Grand Place from outside, then spend more time under cover at the Royal Galleries and Royal Museums of Fine Arts.

If the museum is closed

Walk through Sablon and the Marolles district, take in the view from the Palace of Justice, and return to the square around sunset.

Small tip

The Central Station and old town are close, but the cobblestones and crowds make it easier to keep luggage transfers short.

Final check before departure

  • Check the official Brussels tourism information for square events and whether the City Hall is open for visits.
  • Check the museum you’ve chosen for its closing day and last admission time.
  • Save the route to the Central Station lockers and back to your accommodation.

Cultural events and installations may take place at the Grand Place. Check the city’s official square information and your chosen museum’s visitor information on the same day. If there’s an event, switch the order of your square visit and museum visit.
