At a glance

  • Use the lower entrance on Queen’s Road Central and the exit on Jubilee Street to walk through the building without retracing your steps.
  • First look at the old market columns, red brick, and broad central staircase. Then take a break in the air conditioning, use the restroom, refill your water, and choose only the shops you need.
  • Keep your market visit brief, then continue to Graham Street’s working market lanes and Tai Kwun’s former police and prison buildings to see the contrast in how these places have been repurposed.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

60-minute break on a hot afternoon

Graham Street Market → Queen’s Road Central entrance → heritage display and central staircase → cool off indoors → Jubilee Street exit → Mid-Levels Escalator

How to fit it in

From Central MTR Station, walk along Queen’s Road Central to the 1st-floor heritage display and central staircase. Exit onto Jubilee Street and join the escalator route.

Reality check

Transport

Walk above ground from Central MTR Station, then head toward Jubilee Street to join the Mid-Levels Escalator. If you’re coming from Sheung Wan, walk west to east in one direction to avoid backtracking.

Time

Allow 60–70 minutes: 20 minutes for the building and heritage display, 20 minutes to rest in the air conditioning and use the restroom, and 20–30 minutes for a snack. Set a 90-minute limit if you plan to browse pop-ups or shops.

Cost

You can visit the public areas without buying anything, so you don’t need to set aside an admission budget. Decide in advance whether you’d rather spend on one snack or one souvenir, and check shop prices on site.

Safety

Don’t block foot traffic while taking photos by the central staircase or escalators. During heavy rain or a typhoon warning, check surface conditions at each exit and current operating notices. If indoor connections are disrupted, head straight back to an MTR station.

If plans change

Central Market: if an event makes it crowded

Move your break to IFC Mall or indoors at Tai Kwun.

Small tip

Divide your time into activities, such as 20 minutes looking around, 20 minutes resting, and 20 minutes getting a snack, so shopping doesn’t take over. If you have a Tai Kwun reservation, plan backward from that time.

Final check before departure

  • Check the official website for today’s hours, events, and restricted areas
  • Plan backward 60–70 minutes from your next reservation, such as at Tai Kwun
  • If heavy rain is forecast, save the nearest MTR route for getting back

Shop, event, and public-area hours vary by date. Check the official schedule.
