At a glance
- See Brașov’s Old Town and mountain views.
- Peleș Castle is a symbol of the Romanian Kingdom.
- Staying overnight in Sighișoara gives you more time to take in its medieval citadel atmosphere.
- If you choose Bran, take a bus toward Bran–Moeciu from Brașov’s Autogara 2. Bran Castle’s official visitor information lists a one-way journey of about 50 minutes, buses about every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly on weekends, and a one-way fare of about 13 lei. That means the bus fare alone is about 26 lei round trip; transport from your accommodation to Autogara 2, waiting time, and castle admission are extra. The stop in central Bran is near the castle entrance. When you arrive, check where to catch the return bus and when the next one leaves.
- For castle admission, use Bran Castle’s official Plan your visit page to check the Standard Ticket and age category for your date. Don’t confuse prices for horror experiences or priority entry with the regular ticket. If you choose Peleș, look up a Brașov→Sinaia round trip on CFR, then check separate access from Sinaia Station to the Peleș Castle entrance on a map and with local transport. Don’t treat the station arrival time as your castle entry time. If stairs or uphill walking are difficult, take a vehicle from the station.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Visit the Old Town and the Black Church, then spend the night in Brașov. Choose Mount Tâmpa only if the weather and service conditions are suitable.
Visit Bran Castle by bus from Autogara 2 or Peleș Castle by train to Sinaia. Peleș is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; choose only a bookable time slot from Wednesday through Sunday. During the special closure from November 2 to December 1, 2026, skip Peleș and switch to Bran or Brașov Old Town. Spend the day on one castle, including the round trip, waiting, and visit, then return to Brașov for your second night.
Travel from Brașov to Bucharest or your next city. Don’t add a same-day round trip to Sighișoara or another castle on a long-distance travel day.
Add Sighișoara on a separate day only if the round-trip train schedule works well or you plan to stay there overnight. This extends the itinerary by changing the departure day of the three-day plan.
History and context
Brașov is a mountain city shaped by Saxon settlers and Romanian and Hungarian cultures.

Romania is a good add-on after you’ve seen the major cities of Western Europe and want to explore mountain towns and citadels.
Reality check
For Bran Castle, check buses toward Bran–Moeciu from Brașov Autogara 2, then walk from the stop in central Bran to the castle entrance. Bran Castle’s official information lists buses every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly on weekends, but check the actual last outbound and return buses at the terminal. If you choose Peleș Castle, search for a Brașov→Sinaia round-trip train with CFR Călători and allow separate uphill travel time from Sinaia Station to the castle.
The three-day itinerary is: arrive in Brașov and visit the Old Town, take a round trip to one castle, then depart for your next city. Don’t combine Bran and Peleș in one day. Add a day and an overnight stay if you want to include Sighișoara.
Don’t try to visit every castle just because Romania seems inexpensive. Add up the admission for the circuit you choose, round-trip bus or train, local transport, and meals. Visiting both castles also increases travel costs.
Mountain roads and trains in this region can be delayed. You’ll have more peace of mind if you return to your base city before dark.
If plans change
If local connections don’t line up, spend the day at Brașov’s Black Church and in the Old Town below Mount Tâmpa.
If mountain paths are icy, cancel the Râșnov and mountain walks and switch to indoor attractions in Brașov Old Town. Even though Sinaia is reachable by train, don’t plan to visit the interior of Peleș Castle as an indoor alternative on Mondays, Tuesdays, or during its special closure.
Don’t book an indoor visit to Peleș on Mondays or Tuesdays, or from November 2 to December 1, 2026. Check Bran’s opening hours and round-trip bus, or take a break in Brașov Old Town. Pelișor has its own closure schedule, so don’t assume it will be open as an alternative.
Small tip
Allow for train delays and travel on mountain roads. Don’t plan to return from a castle just in time for the last bus or train.
Final check before departure
- Check the bus stop and payment method for departures from Brașov.
- Check Peleș closures on Mondays and Tuesdays and the special closure from November 2 to December 1, 2026. Even on open days, match an official time slot and last entry with your round-trip train, allowing time to get from Sinaia Station to the entrance. Check the official special closure schedule again for other years and dates.
- Check temperatures and snow forecasts in the Carpathian Mountains.
Peleș Castle is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and will be closed for preservation work from November 2 to December 1, 2026. On those dates, switch to Bran or Brașov Old Town. If you choose Bran, check the round-trip bus from Autogara 2 and the castle’s opening hours and tickets first. For other visit dates, check the official time slots and special closure notices before paying for Peleș.
