At a glance

  • You can fit Helsinki’s market, cathedral, Design District, and Suomenlinna into 2 days.
  • A sauna visit is an easy way to experience everyday Finnish culture.
  • Rovaniemi is an option for extending a winter trip, but you’ll need to plan for flights and cold-weather gear.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

City itinerary · Days 1–3

On day 1, visit Market Square and the Design District. On day 2, take the ferry to Suomenlinna and back, then visit a sauna you’ve booked. On day 3, stop by the library or take a short walk before you leave. You’ll stay 2 nights in Helsinki; don’t schedule sauna admission right after the ferry return.

Winter combination · Days 1–2

Spend the first night in a Helsinki hotel. On day 2, explore the city briefly, pick up your bags, and board a VR sleeper train north. Spend the second night on the train.

Winter combination · Days 3–4

Keep the morning you arrive in Rovaniemi free for your bags, cold-weather gear, and getting to your hotel. Schedule activities only for the afternoon or later. Spend nights 3 and 4 in a Rovaniemi hotel. The Northern Lights aren’t guaranteed; if a tour is canceled, switch to an indoor activity or sauna.

Winter combination · Days 5–6

On day 5, take the domestic flight you booked back to Helsinki and spend your last night in a hotel. Fly home internationally on day 6. If you take the overnight train back instead, set aside an extra day so you have enough time in Helsinki before departure.

Food and restaurants

  • Salmon soup and market snacks are easy additions to a short Helsinki itinerary.
  • Pair a meal or café stop with your sauna visit for a relaxed taste of local culture.
  • In northern Finland in winter, plan more cautiously around restaurant hours and transportation.

How to fit it in

Think of Finland as two trip options: a short stay in Helsinki or a winter extension to Lapland.

Reality check

Transport

For Helsinki–Rovaniemi, search VR for an overnight train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi on your travel date. Sleeper cabins and seats are different products, and VR cabins are private to your group. Check the number of beds, whether a shower is included, baggage rules, and change conditions before paying. Count the night on the train separately from hotel nights, and don’t book a tour for the morning you arrive. For Helsinki–Suomenlinna, check the Market Square–Suomenlinna ferry and a pass valid for the required zones with HSL.

Time

The city itinerary is 2 nights and 3 days, with both nights in Helsinki. The sample winter combination is 5 nights and 6 days: 1 night in a Helsinki hotel, 1 night on the northbound sleeper train, 2 nights in a Rovaniemi hotel, and 1 night in a Helsinki hotel after returning. This itinerary assumes you have checked the overnight train’s arrival time for your travel date and secured a seat on the return domestic flight. Return to Helsinki the day before your international departure.

Cost

For a winter budget, add up 2 nights in Helsinki hotels, 2 nights in a Rovaniemi hotel, the northbound sleeper cabin, the return domestic flight, transfers between the airport or station and your hotel, cold-weather clothing, and activities. When comparing Northern Lights tours, check that pickup, clothing rental, and cancellation terms are the same. For a Helsinki city break, start by budgeting for 2 hotel nights, HSL transit and the ferry, and sauna admission.

Safety

Winter sidewalks can freeze and become slippery, so wear shoes with good traction. Ferry service can change with the weather; check the day’s service updates.

If plans change

Backup plan for winter rail delays

If your connection to Rovaniemi is disrupted, add a night in Helsinki and rebook only a later service you can get a refund for.

Backup plan for reduced ferry service in the archipelago

If island travel is disrupted, explore Helsinki’s waterfront, saunas, and Design District with the same public transit pass.

Small tip

A winter trip to Rovaniemi doesn’t guarantee Northern Lights. Set realistic expectations based on the weather, moon phase, and length of your stay.

Final check before departure

  • Check train schedules and overnight seat options with Finnish Railways (VR).
  • Plan around daylight hours and how cold it feels outdoors.
  • Check the sauna’s rules for swimsuits, towels, and reservations.

The first thing to plan for is a backup if winter rail service is delayed. Check same-day opening hours and availability, and include alternate transportation and lodging in your budget. If your connection to Rovaniemi is disrupted, add a night in Helsinki and rebook only a later service you can get a refund for.
