At a glance

  • Berlin has a rich modern history, with the Wall, Museum Island, and Brandenburg Gate at its heart.
  • Munich is a good base for beer halls and palaces, with nearby castles and the Alps within reach on day trips.
  • Rothenburg, Trier, and Koblenz add ancient Roman history and medieval cityscapes to the trip.
  • This 7-night, 8-day itinerary travels from the south to the west. Avoid booking paid attractions on days when you change overnight stops. If the transfer via Rothenburg takes too long, simplify the trip by skipping that night and traveling directly from Munich to Cologne, giving yourself more time there. Treat a Rhine River cruise as an optional experience, not essential transport.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

City break · 4 nights, 5 days

Stay in one Berlin hotel for 4 nights. Keep arrival day light, spend the second day on modern history, visit one museum on the third, choose either Potsdam or a deeper exploration of Berlin on the fourth, then depart on the fifth day.

Bavaria and the Rhine · 7 nights, 8 days

3 nights in Munich → 1 night in Rothenburg → 3 nights in Cologne. On day 3, choose either a nearby castle or Berchtesgaden. Travel to Rothenburg on day 4 and to Cologne on day 5. Take a round trip to Koblenz on day 6, spend day 7 in Cologne, and leave for the Cologne-area airport or your next city on day 8. Don’t add Berlin to this extended itinerary.

History and context

Division and reunification

Central sights such as the Brandenburg Gate and the memorials can be explored on foot. The Berlin Wall Memorial and East Side Gallery are farther apart, so travel between them by public transit.

The Holy Roman Empire and medieval towns

Rothenburg and the Rhine region evoke city walls, guilds, and historic trading towns.

Bavarian identity

Munich has a strong regional character in its food, festivals, and architecture.

Food and restaurants

  • Munich is a good place to try a meal at a beer hall, with sausages and Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle).
  • Berlin has plenty of options, from currywurst and kebabs to international restaurants.
  • Cologne’s Kölsch beer and Old Town brewery culture can become a highlight of your trip.

How to fit it in

Choose Berlin for modern history, Munich for palaces and mountains, or the Rhine region for cathedrals and riverside cities. Don’t schedule ticketed attractions on a travel day.

Reality check

Transport

Search DB for Muenchen Hbf→Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber, then Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber→Koeln Hbf the next day. Don’t confuse Rothenburg with other places of the same name, and check the actual ticket for transfer stations such as Steinach. Allow 4–5 hours for trains and transfers on the first travel day, and 5–6 hours on the next, plus time to check in. For Cologne–Koblenz, check whether you’re taking a regional or long-distance train and allow about 1 hour 30 minutes each way. These are planning buffers, not guaranteed travel times on your visit date.

Time

Set aside a full day each for Berlin’s modern history and Museum Island. Allow plenty of time for round trips to nearby castles or small towns.

Cost

On DB, check the total cost for both long-distance legs and a Cologne–Koblenz round trip using the same dates, passenger count, and fare class. Compare low-cost tickets tied to specific trains with flexible tickets, and list seat reservation costs separately. Regional transport passes do not automatically include ICE or IC trains. Add up 7 nights of accommodation, 8 days of meals, round trips to nearby areas, and tickets for your chosen castle or museum. Don’t use DB’s advertised lowest fare as the budget for every leg.

Safety

Keep an eye on your belongings around Berlin’s major stations and nightlife areas. Also expect quieter streets on Sundays, when many shops are closed.

If plans change

A backup plan for long-distance DB delays

Don’t rush to catch a connection on a separate ticket; check passenger rights and alternative services first.

A backup plan for accommodation price spikes during trade fairs

Instead of staying in the event city center, choose an outer station on the same regional transit network or extend your stay in the next city.

Small tip

Sunday shop closures and museum closing days vary by city and can affect your itinerary.

Final check before departure

  • Check for DB construction work and allow enough time for transfers.
  • Mark each city’s museum closing days on your calendar.
  • Check which trains are covered by regional and long-distance tickets.

Recheck train travel between cities and museum hours for your travel dates. The Pergamon Museum in Berlin is currently closed in its entirety, so choose another museum for your Museum Island visit.
