At a glance
- In Athens, visit the Acropolis and the archaeological museums separately to feel less worn out.
- On islands like Zakynthos, the beaches are the main draw, so check the weather and boat services.
- Santorini and Mykonos are expensive and crowded, so include them only if you have a clear reason to go.
- Santorini is in the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, while Zakynthos is in the Ionian Sea to the west. They have different departure ports and flight options. Don’t assume a Piraeus–Santorini ticket can also be used for Zakynthos. For a short trip, choose just one of the two islands.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Stay in Athens for all 3 nights. Visit Plaka on arrival day, the Acropolis and a museum on day 2, and choose the National Archaeological Museum or Cape Sounion on day 3. Depart on day 4.
Spend day 1 arriving, day 2 at historic sites, and day 3 visiting a museum and resting, with 3 nights in Athens. Don’t try to squeeze in an early-morning island transfer the day after you arrive.
On day 4, fly to Santorini (JTR) or Zakynthos (ZTH) and stay for 2 nights. Return to Athens on day 6 for your final night, then leave on an international flight on day 7. Avoid planning an island-to-international flight connection on the same day.
History and context
Athens’ historic sites offer a window into the origins of democracy, philosophy, theater, and temple culture.
Greek cities also retain traces of the Eastern Roman and Ottoman periods that followed antiquity.
The Aegean islands were crossroads for trade, defense, and religious travel by sea.
Places and meals
A highlight of any first visit to Greece. Timing your visit to avoid the midday heat is important.
Google MapsA good place to make sense of ancient sculptures and artifacts after visiting historic sites.
Google MapsA signature Zakynthos view. Check access and safety restrictions before you go.
Google MapsAn option to consider for a history outing near Athens.
Google MapsFood and restaurants
- Souvlaki and gyros are quick, easy meals on the go.
- A taverna is a good place to share Greek salad, seafood, and grilled meat with a group.
- On the islands, restaurants with the best views tend to cost more. Check the menu and location ahead of time.
How to fit it in
First decide whether your trip to Greece is mainly about ancient sites or an island getaway, then choose your transport accordingly.
Reality check
Ferries to Santorini leave from Piraeus Port, not central Athens, and arrive at Athinios Port. Depending on the vessel, the trip can take about 5–8 hours or longer, so treat the full day as a travel day, including getting to the port and meeting boarding deadlines. Ferries to Zakynthos depart from Killini on the west coast, which requires a long overland trip from Athens. For a 6-night, 7-day trip, it’s simpler to book a flight first: ATH–JTR or ATH–ZTH.
Visit the Acropolis early to avoid the heat, and finish your island trip in Athens on the last day to allow for travel delays.
A cliffside-view room in Santorini and a beachfront room in Zakynthos are different kinds of stays. Add up the cost of 4 nights in Athens and 2 nights on your chosen island, round-trip island flights or ferries, and transport between the port or airport and your accommodation. For example, if an island room costs €200 per night, two nights cost €400; even when two people split the room, meals and local transport are extra. This is an example of how to calculate a budget, not a price forecast. In winter, seasonal closures of boats and restaurants limit your options.
The midday heat at historic sites in summer can be exhausting. Bring water and a hat, and follow wind alerts and boat service updates at island beaches.
If plans change
Don’t look for unofficial replacement boats at the port; extend your stay in Athens or on your current island.
Move outdoor sites to the first time slot the next day, and use the day for an archaeological museum visit and rest at your accommodation.
Small tip
Visiting outdoor historic sites in the summer midday heat can be exhausting. Aim for morning visits, a midday break, and an evening stroll.
Final check before departure
- Check the ferry operator and port name.
- Check visiting hours and heat advisories for historic sites.
- Book refundable accommodation before and after island transfers.
The first thing to check is your backup plan if an island ferry is canceled. Check same-day operating hours and booking availability, and budget for extra transport and accommodation if plans change. Don’t look for unofficial replacement boats at the port; extend your stay in Athens or on your current island.
