Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

2 nights, 3 days · Arrival day

Stay in one Amsterdam hotel for 2 nights. After arrival, walk around the canals and Jordaan neighborhood; don’t lock in a museum visit.

2 nights, 3 days · Full second day

Book just one museum, the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum, for 2–3 hours. Eat in the same museum district, then walk by the canals. Don’t schedule two major museums back to back.

2 nights, 3 days · Departure day

Visit a café or market near your hotel, then collect your luggage and leave. Don’t add a side trip.

4 nights, 5 days · Add a nearby trip

Stay at the same Amsterdam hotel for 4 nights. On the third day, visit a second museum; on the fourth, take a round trip to either Zaanse Schans or Delft. Rotterdam is an alternative to Delft if you’re interested in modern architecture. Don’t try to visit all three cities in one day.

The Dutch Golden Age and maritime trade

Amsterdam’s canals and museums reflect the commerce, seafaring, and civic culture of the 17th century.

Water and the city

Reclaimed land, canals, and dikes are key to understanding Dutch cities.

Modern history, tolerance, and commerce

Food and restaurants

  • Herring, stroopwafels, and pancakes are good snack or lunch options.
  • Indonesian rijsttafel is a way to explore the history of colonial trade through food.
  • Restaurants by the canals may charge a premium for the setting, so check menu prices in advance.
Food hall

Choose a food hall when you want to compare different dishes, or a café when you want a break during a canal walk. This helps you match the meal to your plans.

Apple pie and stroopwafels are more like snacks, while rijsttafel is suited to a long dinner shared across several dishes.

Before a timed museum visit, choose takeaway or a quick lunch instead of a restaurant with a long wait. After your visit, head toward the canals for dinner.

How to fit it in

For a first trip to the Netherlands, three days in Amsterdam plus an additional day for a nearby trip makes for a well-paced itinerary.

Reality check

Transport

Search NS for Amsterdam Centraal→Zaandijk Zaanse Schans. Allow about 20 minutes by train, then plan a 15–20-minute walk to the windmill village. For Delft, leave about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes each way for Amsterdam Centraal→Delft; for Rotterdam, allow the same for Amsterdam Centraal→Rotterdam Centraal. Check actual departures and any additional fares. Compare Amsterdam city tram passes separately from NS intercity fares.

Time

A large art museum for 2–3 hours, lunch for 1 hour, and a 1–2-hour canal walk make a good second-day plan. Allow 4–5 hours total for Zaanse Schans, including the round-trip train, walking, and time there. Plan 6–7 hours for Delft or Rotterdam, including intercity travel. On departure day, allow 30 minutes to collect luggage, plus time to travel to the airport or station and arrive with the recommended buffer.

Cost

As of 2026-10-03, the Rijksmuseum’s official standard adult ticket costs €25 and requires a timed reservation. For the Van Gogh Museum, check the total price for your visit date on the official booking site, including age category, standard admission, and any audio options. Estimate nearby-trip costs as round-trip NS fare plus admission to any windmills or museums you plan to enter, plus meals. Walking around the windmill village does not include admission to every paid attraction. If you visit both museums, budget for two tickets and separately check whether your city transport pass covers them.

Safety

Bikes can approach quickly and quietly, so look both ways twice before crossing. Keep an eye on your belongings in the crowds around the central station.

If plans change

High-wind backup if you skip biking

Skip intercity cycling and keep the canal and museum plans with NS trains and city trams.

A backup if you don’t have a tulip-season reservation

Don’t count on getting into Keukenhof without a reservation; switch to markets and botanical gardens in Leiden or Haarlem.

Small tip

Bike traffic moves quickly, so keep bike lanes and roads clearly in mind when walking.

Final check before departure

  • Check for NS engineering works and which payment methods you can use to check in for NS train travel.
  • Read the bike rental insurance terms and return-time rules.
  • Book peak-season lodging and timed-entry attractions first.

Tickets for the Anne Frank House are sold only through its official website. Every Tuesday at 10 a.m. local time, tickets go on sale for visits six weeks later. Skip the intercity cycling and keep your canal and museum plans using Dutch Railways (NS) trains and city trams.
