At a glance
- The yellow M3 line runs from Centrale FS to Duomo in four stops, with no transfers. The train ride takes about 10 minutes, but allow 20–30 minutes each way for walking through the station and getting through the gates.
- The official KiPoint luggage storage at Milano Centrale is in the ground-floor shopping gallery. Its published 2026 hours are 07:00–21:00 daily. Allow extra time for drop-off and pickup queues.
- A rooftop elevator ticket saves you the climb, but the route is not completely step-free. There may be stairs on the upper terraces and on the way down, so check the official accessibility information first if you have mobility needs.
- If you eat near Piazza del Duomo, choose something you can finish in 30–40 minutes. If the ordering line is long, it’s easier to protect your train connection by returning to Milano Centrale and eating there.

Google MapsWhen This Itinerary Works

Reality check
Milano Centrale and Duomo are connected directly by the M3, with no transfers. Take the train toward San Donato on the way there and toward Comasina on the return. The train ride takes about 10 minutes; allow 30 minutes each way including walking inside the stations and waiting. Make sure your next ticket lists Milano Centrale as the departure station.
The 4-hour example adds up to 240 minutes: 30 minutes to store your luggage + 60 minutes for the round trip into the city + 90 minutes for sightseeing and a meal + 60 minutes after returning to the station to collect your luggage and get ready to board. With the same buffer, a 3-hour layover leaves just 30 minutes for sightseeing.
The basic itinerary costs include round-trip metro fare, luggage storage, and food. You don’t need a cathedral ticket to see the exterior and walk through the Galleria. If you add the rooftop, check ticket prices and refund terms on the official booking page.
Keep your phone and wallet in front of you in crowded areas at Milano Centrale and Duomo. Don’t leave your luggage receipt or passport in your checked bag. If your first train is delayed by 20 minutes or more or the luggage line is long, drop extra stops one by one. When your return alarm goes off, head to Milano Centrale even if you’re still eating.
If Your Layover Is a Different Length
There’s little time for the round trip into the city and luggage pickup. We recommend eating at the station and waiting for your next train.
This version shortens sightseeing and your meal to 30 minutes. Take a quick look at the Duomo exterior and the Galleria, then return. If the luggage storage line is long, stay at the station instead.
Use some of the basic itinerary’s sightseeing and meal time for the rooftop visit. Even with a timed ticket, you’ll need time for security and queues, so 5 hours gives you more breathing room than 4. The elevator route may still include some stairs. If the rooftop closes due to weather, follow the exterior itinerary.
Choose either the exterior of Teatro alla Scala and Brera’s narrow streets, or Sforza Castle and Parco Sempione. Spend your time on one place you most want to see instead of trying to fit in both walking routes and the rooftop.
The museum is closed on Monday, September 7, 2026. On other days, you’ll need to book in advance and arrive 30 minutes before entry, so it’s best to plan a separate visit rather than add it to a short layover.
Small tip
Return to Milano Centrale 1 hour before your next train departs. Use that hour to collect your luggage and get to the platform. If your incoming train is delayed or the luggage storage line is long, shorten your sightseeing time.
Final check before departure
- Check the departure station and departure time for your next train to Florence.
