At a glance
- Don’t try to see two major art museums in one day.
- Bike lanes are not for pedestrians, so don’t stop in them.
- For a canal cruise, check both the departure dock and the drop-off point.
- Start by understanding how the canals, museums, and residential neighborhoods fit together before focusing on the Red Light District.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Visit just one of the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum, choosing whichever has a reservation available. If timed tickets are unavailable, don’t switch to a second major museum that day; spend more time walking along the canals instead.
Walk through the Jordaan and the Canal Belt, and have lunch at an indoor market. Check GVB routes for construction and diversions between Central Station and Museumplein.
Choose a canal cruise if you want to see the canal-side buildings and bridges from the water. For a short crossing to northern Amsterdam, take the free IJ ferry behind Central Station. The ferry does not cruise around the canals. Before booking a cruise, check its departure and return docks and cancellation terms.
How to fit it in
Use this as a basic route for your first day in Amsterdam or a two-night stay in the Netherlands.
Reality check
Take the tram between Central Station and Museumplein, and walk around the canal district. Check the Amsterdam transit operator GVB for construction diversions and payment methods.
Allow eight hours for the day, including three hours at the museum, two hours walking along the canals, and extra time for travel and meals. If you choose a cruise, allow one to two hours. If you take the IJ ferry, check the round-trip time for that route with GVB.
Budget for one timed-entry museum ticket as the main expense. Add a separate fare if you choose a canal cruise. There is no canal cruise fare if you choose the free GVB ferry across the IJ.
Look both ways again when crossing bike lanes and tram tracks, and keep your belongings secured in the crowds around Central Station.
If plans change
Switch to one bookable museum, such as the Stedelijk Museum or a photography museum, and a walk along the Jordaan canals.
Cancel the cruise and switch to an indoor market or a small museum. Use the free IJ ferry only if GVB is operating it and the wind and rain are manageable.
Small tip
For popular museums and the Anne Frank House, checking advance ticket availability is far more important than waiting in line on the day.
Final check before departure
- Reserve a timed entry at one museum.
- Save a route between your accommodation and Museumplein in GVB.
- Check the cruise cancellation terms and departure dock.
- Check the opening hours and last entry times for both the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, then book your chosen museum first. Plan lunch and your canal walk around the museum visit so you don’t arrive late after spending too long by the canals.
Ticket dates and times may vary for the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. First secure an official ticket for one museum, and add a cruise only if that day’s departure dock and cancellation terms work for you.
