At a glance

  • On long travel days, such as Christchurch to Tekapo or Tekapo to Queenstown, don’t count stops along the way as sightseeing days.
  • If you include Mount Cook, don’t book accommodation too far away for that night, since the return drive and weather can affect your plans.
  • If you’re heading west through the glacier region, leave room to add a night or turn back east if roads are closed or rain is forecast.
  • For your first South Island trip, spend an extra night in either Queenstown or Tekapo to recover after long drives instead of adding more stops.
  • A 7-day one-way trip works best with different arrival and departure airports, such as flying into Christchurch and out of Queenstown. If your return flight leaves from Christchurch, don’t add a long drive on your last day: set aside a separate return day or visit fewer regions. Compare one-way rental-car drop-off availability and fees before booking flights.
  • Mount Cook is not an easy quick stop between Tekapo and Queenstown. On a hiking day, allow time for the drive there and back as well as the trail. Check DOC’s current access and weather alerts for routes such as Hooker Valley Track. Don’t let waiting for a clear view in rain or high winds delay you until you have to drive to the next town at night.
  • Choose accommodation based on your next direction of travel and where you can shop for groceries and fuel, rather than on photo spots. An extra night gives you time to do laundry and keep a backup plan, reducing tasks on long travel days. Moving to a different place every night also takes time for packing and check-in.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1

Arrive in Christchurch, pick up your car, get used to driving on the left, and stay in the city or near the airport.

Day 2

Drive from Christchurch to Tekapo. Take breaks and shop for groceries along the way, then stay in Tekapo.

Day 3

If roads and weather are good, make a round trip to Mount Cook. Otherwise, stay another night in Tekapo and take a short walk.

Day 4

Drive from Tekapo to Queenstown. Check in without adding more sightseeing stops.

Days 5–6

Continue staying in Queenstown on Days 5–6 and plan one key activity for a day with good weather.

Day 7

Return your car and depart according to your flight time, or end your trip in Queenstown.

How to fit it in

Spend your first day in Christchurch getting used to driving on the left, then travel to Tekapo and stay overnight on day two. Make the round trip to Mount Cook only on a day when you're staying another night in Tekapo and the weather is good; don't add another hike on the day you drive to Queenstown. Planning an open-jaw trip into Christchurch and out of Queenstown can save you from retracing the same route.

Reality check

Transport

Before the two driving days, Christchurch to Tekapo and Tekapo to Queenstown, check SH8 and connecting roads for closures, roadworks, and estimated travel times in the NZTA Journey Planner. Shop for groceries and fuel in your departure city or a larger town. If Lindis Pass is closed on the Tekapo to Queenstown drive, don't take an unpaved detour on your own; consider extending your current stay instead.

Time

For 7 days, plan 1 day to arrive and adjust, 1 day to travel to Tekapo, 1 day for Tekapo and an optional Mount Cook trip, 1 day to travel to Queenstown, 2 days in Queenstown, and 1 day to depart. On each driving day, add time to the NZTA estimate for meals, fuel, photo stops, and at least 30–60 minutes of rest. Aim to arrive before sunset.

Cost

Compare the total cost of the rental car, one-way drop-off, fuel and parking, 6 nights of accommodation, and optional activities. A car with a lower daily rate may cost more once the one-way drop-off fee is added. Check the booking page for weather cancellation refunds for mountain and water activities. Don’t budget as if you must buy another paid activity if one is canceled.

Safety

Plan to arrive at your accommodation before dark, keeping in mind left-side driving, fatigue from long distances, ice, and high winds.

If plans change

If there’s rain or high wind at Mount Cook

Stay another night in Tekapo and switch to a short village walk and some downtime. Check your accommodation’s change policy before deciding whether you can delay the following day’s drive to Queenstown.

If you’re flying out of Christchurch

Set aside a separate day for the return drive or shorten the trip to a round trip to Tekapo and Mount Cook. Don’t try to fit in all of Queenstown on the same timeline as the 7-day one-way example.

Small tip

Before booking, check the latest official information on winter road conditions, insurance coverage, and international driving permit requirements.

Final check before departure

  • Compare your arrival and departure airports with your car drop-off location, and check one-way booking, cancellation, and operating-hour details.
  • Leave sightseeing plans open on both long travel days and save locations for fuel, meals, and breaks.
  • Check NZTA road conditions and DOC track access separately. Decide what you could skip to shorten your stay and what accommodation changes would let you stay an extra night.

Check mountain road closures, roadworks, weather, and rental-car conditions again the day before and the day of travel.
