At a glance
- Decide which place matters more to you and book the other with plenty of time in between.
- At Waitomo, check the clothing and fitness requirements for each tour type, such as walking, boat, and adventure tours.
- Hobbiton is visited on guided tours, not by entering freely, so check the departure point and check-in time.
- Before paying, check whether you can change a booking if rain or road delays make you miss it.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
First check the duration and finishing point for your Waitomo tour. Don’t allow the same amount of time for the shorter Glowworm Caves tour and a longer adventure tour.
As a planning example, start by leaving at least 3 hours between the expected end of your first tour and Hobbiton check-in. If that’s not enough after adding the actual driving time between the two departure addresses, lunch, fuel, and parking, split the tours across separate days.
The standard Hobbiton Movie Set Tour takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Check whether your booking departs from Shire’s Rest and arrive as far in advance as your booking confirmation instructs.
How to fit it in
Even in the season with longer daylight, book no more than two paid tours in a day. Save each departure point on your map using the address in the operator’s booking confirmation.
Reality check
Driving yourself is the simplest option, but you can also compare tours departing from Auckland or Rotorua. Check the addresses so you don’t combine tours with different departure points.
Add the standard Hobbiton tour duration of about 2 hours 30 minutes, the time for your chosen Waitomo tour, and at least 3 hours of planning time between bookings. The 3 hours is a planning allowance for meals, travel, and check-in, not a claim about the driving time. If the available tour times don’t fit, split them across two days.
Add together admission for both tours, vehicle costs, and meals, and review the change and cancellation terms. For package tours, check what transport is included and which city they depart from.
Follow the operator’s directions on clothing, photography, and movement in the caves. Watch for slippery outdoor paths in the rain, and don’t speed to make up for schedule delays.
If plans change
Don’t try to move the other tour to an earlier time. Instead, have a meal in a Waikato town and take a short walk on an official trail.
Visit Waitomo and Hobbiton on separate days, or include just one of them on the day you travel to Rotorua for an overnight stay.
Small tip
Adding a round trip to Auckland to the same day makes for a long drive. The day will feel less rushed if you stay the next night in Rotorua or Hamilton.
Final check before departure
- Compare the exact departure addresses and check-in times for both bookings.
- Add meals, fuel, and a 30-minute buffer to the official estimated driving time.
- Check cave clothing and photography rules, and prepare for rain outdoors at Hobbiton.
Departure points, check-in times, tour durations, weather arrangements, and availability vary by product. Check confirmations and notifications from both operators again on the day of your bookings.
