At a glance
- For the basic plan, visit one place in the Grand Palace area in the morning, then head to the riverside at Phra Arthit and Rambuttri in the afternoon. Take just two boats north, and plan to return to your hotel by land.
- If you want to visit inside Wat Arun, make it the main focus of the day instead of the Grand Palace and rework your boat route. The Chao Phraya Express Boat, which runs along the river, and the cross-river ferries, which make short trips between the two banks, are different services. Don’t assume they share tickets or piers.
- After dinner in Phra Arthit, decide whether to continue to Khao San based on the noise and your energy. If you’re tired, finish in Rambuttri and return to your hotel.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Take the BTS to Saphan Taksin Station and head to Sathorn/Central Pier → Check that the northbound orange-flag express boat stops at Tha Chang (N9) → Get off at Tha Chang → Walk to the Grand Palace’s official entrance. Don’t try to visit both the Grand Palace and inside Wat Arun.
After lunch and an indoor break, return to Tha Chang (N9) → Check that the northbound orange-flag boat stops at Phra Arthit (N13) → Head to the Phra Arthit riverside. Allow plenty of time for walking around the Grand Palace area, getting to the pier, and waiting. If the service isn’t running, switch just this leg to land transport.
If the weather cooperates, watch the sunset by the Phra Arthit riverside and have dinner in Rambuttri. Khao San is a short optional walk; don’t add ICONSIAM or Asiatique. Head to a well-lit main road where a ride-hailing vehicle can stop, then return to your hotel.
Places and meals
This is the basic morning plan: get off at Tha Chang and walk to the Grand Palace’s official entrance. Visit inside Wat Arun on a separate optional day.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
This works for a basic day that visits the Grand Palace area in the morning and ends in Phra Arthit or Rambuttri. Split up plans that try to include Wat Arun and a riverside mall on the same day.
Reality check
The basic boat route has two legs: Sathorn/Central Pier to Tha Chang (N9), then Tha Chang (N9) to Phra Arthit (N13). Check the orange-flag stops on the operator’s official route map, then confirm the direction and disembarkation pier with staff on site. Don’t assume sightseeing boats or shuttles have the same fares. Sathorn connects to BTS Saphan Taksin. Plan your final return from the Old Town area by land in advance, for example by ride-hailing vehicle. Before boarding, show staff: “Orange flag, northbound to Tha Chang N9?” for the first leg, and “Orange flag, northbound to Phra Arthit N13?” for the next. If you can’t confirm the flag color, direction, and stop, don’t board yet—ask ticket staff again.
Allow about 7–8 hours: 2–3 hours to visit the Grand Palace area, 1 hour 30 minutes for lunch and a break, a total of 1 hour 30 minutes of planning buffer for getting to the piers, waiting, and the two boat rides, and 2 hours for the riverside and dinner. These are planning estimates, not guaranteed boat travel times. Skip the afternoon boat leg and sunset if there is heavy rain or a long wait.
According to official information as of October 4, 2026, the Grand Palace admission ticket for foreign adults is 500 baht, and a one-way orange-flag express boat ticket is 18 baht. The two rides in this itinerary cost 36 baht, bringing admission and boat fares to 536 baht. Add BTS, meals, and land transport back to your hotel. Tourist boats and private tours have different fares. Buy Grand Palace tickets at the official ticket office or book online. Online tickets are nonrefundable and can’t be changed to another date; check the official price for your visit date before paying.
Wait behind the safety line at the pier, and board only after the boat has fully docked and staff direct you to board. Watch your footing on wet gangways, and be careful of the gap between the pier and boat. In narrow lanes, don’t step suddenly into the road while taking photos.
If plans change
Reduce riverside travel and take a break in an indoor place in the same area, if it’s open. If the Grand Palace or a temple visit doesn’t fit with your next connection, visit just one place that day. Don’t try to link every riverside attraction at night.
Skip the evening destination and return to your hotel. If boat service has ended, check official information for land transport and confirm the destination and total fare before riding.
Small tip
Boat and taxi travel times feel different for riverside trips, so decide on your final mode of transport first.
Final check before departure
- Check temple dress requirements and official admission hours.
- Save the last boat’s departure information and your pickup point for the ride back.
- Check the official page for Tha Chang and Phra Arthit stops and northbound service on your visit date. Save a land-transport pickup point for the return instead of planning to take a boat back after sunset.
The Grand Palace’s official FAQ lists general admission ticket sales from 08:30 to 15:30 and posts updates about entrance and visitor-route changes. Check the Chao Phraya Express Boat’s operating days and pier notices by route on its official service page. For example, the official page lists a maintenance closure at Oriental Pier (N1).
