At a glance
- Allow for possible delays collecting your bags and picking up a vehicle, and start without any paid reservations.
- Plan groceries and fuel, but buy chilled food to match your departure time the next day.
- The walking itinerary in the city center can be shortened to one or two hours if it rains or you’re tired.
- Even if you’re driving to the Mackenzie Basin the next day, prioritize a good night’s sleep over a long drive on your first day.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Travel from the airport into the city, leave your bags at your accommodation, and check only your transportation for the next day.
Walk from the Botanic Gardens along the Avon River to Riverside Market; if you’re tired, visit the gardens only and head back.
Have dinner in the city, check groceries, fuel, and road conditions, then get an early night.
How to fit it in
After arriving at the airport, leave your bags at your accommodation and take a short walk around the Botanic Gardens and the Avon River. Have dinner somewhere near your accommodation.
Reality check
Without a car, the basic option is Metro route 29 toward the City from the stop beside Novotel, north of the International Arrivals Hall, to the Bus Interchange. Official guidance puts the trip into town at about 30 minutes; check the Metro timetable for actual services at your travel time. If your accommodation is far from the Interchange, allow for the final walk with your bags or another service. Airport route 3 has branches, so check for the Airport destination on your return. Don’t choose route 125, which does not go into town, as the same alternative.
Plan a light 2–4-hour itinerary, excluding immigration or domestic flight delays, and allow extra time to pick up a vehicle.
As of October 4, 2026, Metro’s official standard adult bus fare is NZ$3 with a supported contactless card, Motu Move, or Metrocard, and NZ$4 in cash. Cash and Metrocard are scheduled to end on November 23, 2026, so check the current payment guidance if you visit later. Use the same card or device to tap on and off when paying contactlessly. Add any extra trip to your accommodation, groceries, and lodging, then compare the total with the cost of postponing your rental car pickup on the first day.
Don’t drive when tired after a long flight. Watch for bicycle and tram sections and check traffic when crossing roads.
If plans change
Skip the walk and check in at your accommodation; just find out where to shop for groceries the next day.
Switch to one indoor venue in the city, such as Canterbury Museum’s temporary exhibition space.
Small tip
If you pick up a vehicle on your first day, learn the parking rules and how to operate it. If it’s already dark, postpone trips outside the city until the next day.
Final check before departure
- Check your transportation from the airport to your accommodation and the last service.
- Check your rental car pickup time and your accommodation’s parking conditions.
- Save the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) road conditions for the next day.
Market and facility opening hours, city center construction, and airport transportation vary by date. Check each official page and local signs on your arrival day.
