At a glance
- Treat Cathedral Cove’s main access route and the side track closed due to storm damage as having different conditions.
- Local official guidance uses about two hours either side of low tide as the window for the hot-sand area at Hot Water Beach. Check the actual low tide time and surf conditions. For Cathedral Cove, separately prioritize the day’s notice about whether the walking track is open.
- Start from Hahei. Don’t enter private property or restricted areas to get around a closed track.
- If winds are strong, skip the viewpoints and finish with a shorter visit to Hahei village and a nearby beach.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Check whether the DOC track is open, the tide times, and NZTA road conditions. Mark whether the low tide window falls on Day 1 or Day 2, and decide your accommodation check-in time and departure time for the drive back to Auckland first.
Drive from Auckland to Hahei and leave your bags at your accommodation. If the low tide window falls at a safe time after you arrive, visit Hot Water Beach; otherwise, take it easy in Hahei village and at the beach. Do not begin a walk on the restricted Cathedral Cove track after dark.
If Cathedral Cove is open, finish the parking and shuttle or return walk, and time at the beach, then drive back to Auckland while it is still light. If the low tide window falls on Day 2, visit Hot Water Beach first and choose Cathedral Cove only if time permits. If road delays arise, skip the second beach and return.
How to fit it in
Stay one night in Hahei or nearby, and decide the order of beaches and walks on the day based on the tide and weather. Keep fixed bookings to a minimum.
Reality check
A rental car is convenient, but allow extra time for narrow, winding roads. Check official guidance to see whether peak-season shuttle or parking reservations apply.
Treat Tourism New Zealand’s estimate of about 2 hours 30 minutes to drive from Auckland to Hahei as a baseline before traffic and breaks, and leave at least half a day for each direction. Hahei to Hot Water Beach takes about 10 minutes by car according to the local tourism authority; allow extra time for parking and walking. The return walk to Cathedral Cove from the Grange Road entrance takes about 90 minutes. If you use the free Hahei Visitor Car Park, add 60 minutes for the return walk to the entrance. Allow separate time for staying at the beaches, waiting for the shuttle, and the low tide window. If visiting both places in one day feels too much, choose just one.
Budget separately for accommodation, vehicle and fuel, shuttle and parking, meals, and equipment. Changes to access arrangements may add costs.
Watch for surf and tides, falling rocks from cliffs, and closure signs. At the area where people dig in the beach, watch out for hot water and give others space.
If plans change
Skip beach caves and rocky sections; switch to a village walk and officially open viewpoints.
Do not use unofficial detours. Extend your current accommodation or cancel the destination beyond the restricted or delayed section.
Small tip
Don’t assume that a track shown in a recent photo is still open. Local guidance, Department of Conservation (DOC) alerts, and signs on site take priority over map apps.
Final check before departure
- Check official tide information and DOC access alerts.
- Check NZTA road conditions and your fuel level.
- Choose a turn-back time and an alternative beach.
Track access, shuttles and parking, tides, and roads can change with the weather and repair work. Check local guidance, DOC alerts, and New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) road conditions on the day of your visit.
