At a glance
- Boat, flight, and swim experiences have different seasickness, age, fitness, and weather requirements.
- Before paying, check the operator’s required check-in time, clothing guidance, and refund or rebooking terms.
- Keep your distance from wildlife. Don’t feed or approach animals to get a better look.
- If a tour is canceled, make a day of a peninsula walk and a meal rather than immediately driving to a distant city.
- A specific starting point for a canceled afternoon is Point Kean car park. Check the DOC’s official walking track information and current access status, then visit the viewpoints and walk only part of the open clifftop trail before returning the same way. If you walk from town, the official estimate is 50 minutes and 4.4 km just to reach Point Kean, so allow that approach time in addition to the 2-hour walk. DOC recommends allowing at least 3 hours for the full peninsula walkway. Taking a shortcut back along the coastal rocks is not recommended.
- A wet-weather or service-disruption alternative is a coastal walk near Point Kean, if it is confirmed open on the day of your visit. In strong winds or high waves, skip that too and finish with a meal or indoor rest in Kaikōura town. Don’t add another boat or a long coastal route on the same day to make up for a canceled marine tour.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Check the operator’s check-in, seasickness, and cancellation guidance, along with the marine forecast, and stay in Kaikōura.
Arrive with plenty of time for check-in, follow the safety briefing, and keep the distance from wildlife directed by the crew.
After arranging a refund or change, choose a short walk at Point Kean if the weather and path conditions are safe. Stay at least 20 m from seals. If rain or strong winds are severe, stay indoors at your accommodation or in town and sort out your next booking.
How to fit it in
If possible, schedule the marine tour for the morning of your first day during a 2-night stay to leave room for changes. Shorten the peninsula walk to suit the wind and tide. Whale Watch’s official FAQ says advance booking is required, so don’t count on finding a last-minute spot.
Reality check
Kaikōura can be a stop between Christchurch and Picton, but staying overnight in Kaikōura makes it easier to make your tour time. Check train and bus operating days separately.
Whale Watch Kaikōura’s official information says its boat tour takes 3 hours 15 minutes in total, including check-in, the safety briefing, and the round-trip bus to South Bay. Time at sea is a little over 2 hours. Follow the instruction to arrive at the head office on Whaleway Station Road 30 minutes before your tour, and use the check-in time on your booking as the final reference. For swim or flight experiences, check each operator’s total duration separately instead of applying this timing.
Budget separately for the tour type, photo package, accommodation, and change fees. Check the terms for wildlife sightings and refunds as well.
Follow the operator’s boarding decisions and wildlife distance guidelines. Keep away from cliff edges, wet rocks, and seals. DOC advises staying at least 20 m from seals around Point Kean. If seals block the path, turn back rather than passing close by.
If plans change
Walk only the open section of the peninsula walkway and keep a generous distance from seal resting areas.
Switch to a land-based viewpoint or cultural and museum visit, and ask a pharmacist about medication first.
Small tip
If you’re concerned about seasickness, check the operator’s guidance and ask a medical professional before booking. Don’t pack the rest of the day with other fixed reservations in case of cancellation.
Final check before departure
- If you choose Whale Watch, book in advance. Before paying, check seat availability for your visit date, cancellation terms, and check-in cutoff, then check the departure status again on the day.
- Read the cancellation, change, and seasickness policies before paying.
- Bring a windbreaker and prepare to protect your camera from water.
- Children under 3 cannot join the Whale Watch boat tour. If you’re traveling with children, first check the age requirements and participation restrictions for each product.
Marine tours may change or be canceled depending on wind, waves, visibility, and wildlife conditions. Check the operator’s status and coastal warnings on the day.
