At a glance

  • Tre Cime is best experienced as a hike starting at Rifugio Auronzo and heading toward Lavaredo and Locatelli. The three rocky peaks look different as you walk around them.
  • From Ortisei, take the gondola and cable car up to Seceda for views along the Odle mountain ridge. Clouds and wind at the top can differ from conditions in town.
  • Alpe di Siusi is known for its wide alpine meadows and mountain huts. It’s a good place to slow down with a short walk, a bike ride, or a family outing.
  • A small car is often enough for the main paved roads and can be easier to park in narrow village lots. In winter or snowy conditions, check the required winter equipment and your mountain driving experience before choosing a vehicle.
  • One-way returns and fees vary by location, car type, and date. Enter pickup at Milano Centrale and return at Venezia Mestre in the same booking, then check the actual addresses, opening hours, and return procedure for both branches in your rental agreement.

Day by day

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1 · Milano Centrale → Ortisei

Pick up the car when the branch opens in the morning and photograph or video its bodywork, wheels, windows, and fuel level. Take the A4 and A22 northeast to Ortisei and check in. Don’t add a viewpoint on the first day; check the next day’s downhill lift service times instead.

대중교통

Avoid driving into central Milan’s ZTL. Start from the Milano Centrale branch address in your rental agreement. Google Maps 길찾기

Day 2 · Seceda, a day for the jagged ridge

Take the gondola from Ortisei to Furnes, then transfer to the cable car to Seceda. From the upper station, walk to the signature ridge viewpoint. If the weather is stable, add a walk toward the meadows and mountain huts. If clouds roll in quickly, skip the longer hike and head down after enjoying the view and a meal.

대중교통

For summer 2026, the official operating hours for both sections are 08:30–17:30, May 22–November 2. Don’t assume 17:30 is the last downhill departure. Check the last descent and webcam for your visit date the day before, and head down with plenty of time to spare. Google Maps 길찾기

Day 3 · Alpe di Siusi meadows → Cortina

Take the Seis am Schlern cable car or the Ortisei gondola up to Alpe di Siusi and follow gentle meadow trails between mountain huts. In the afternoon, drive to Cortina or Misurina and recheck Tre Cime parking reservations, weather, and shuttle details for the next day.

대중교통

Vehicle access to the Alpe di Siusi plateau is time-restricted. From June 29, 2026, P1 Spitzbühl and P2 Compatsch require online reservations, and general uphill vehicle access is restricted from 09:00 to 17:00 on lift operating days. Taking the cable car is the simplest option. Google Maps 길찾기

Day 4 · Hike at Tre Cime → Return car at Venezia Mestre

Drive up early to your reserved parking at Rifugio Auronzo and hike around Tre Cime. The full loop toward Rifugio Lavaredo and Rifugio Locatelli takes at least half a day, including breaks and photos. If your Mestre return is fixed for the afternoon, don’t insist on doing the full loop: switch to a shorter out-and-back walk or add another day before returning the car.

대중교통

In 2026, passenger cars need an online reservation and license plate registration before entering the Rifugio Auronzo parking area. The listed €40 parking and access pass is valid for 12 hours from the reserved time. If you can’t get a reservation, check the actual schedule and seat reservations for Shuttle 444 between Dobbiaco and Rifugio Auronzo. Google Maps 길찾기

How to fit it in

Plan at least 3 nights in the Dolomites to see all three places. Pick up your car at Milano Centrale in the morning, stay 2 nights in Val Gardena, then 1 night in Cortina or Misurina before returning the car at Venezia Mestre.

Reality check

Transport

This itinerary relies on a one-way rental car picked up at Milano Centrale and returned at Venezia Mestre. A small car can handle the main paved roads, but slow down on mountain passes for sharp turns, cyclists, and changing weather. Mestre has a ZTL, so don’t take side streets beyond the route to the return garage provided by your rental company.

Time

Day 1 from Milan to Ortisei is a travel day. Allow at least half a day each for Seceda and Alpe di Siusi, and at least half a day for the full Tre Cime loop. To fit all three into 4 days / 3 nights, you’ll need flexibility on your return time or a shorter visit to Tre Cime. If hiking is a priority, extend the trip to 5 days / 4 nights and spend another night in Cortina after Tre Cime.

Cost

Compare the base rental rate plus the one-way return fee, automatic transmission, deposit and insurance, highway tolls, fuel, lifts, and mountain parking. The 2026 passenger-car parking and access pass for Tre Cime is listed at €40, but check official booking pages for current lift and parking prices and conditions before booking.

Safety

Wind, clouds, and lightning can change quickly in the mountains. Bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers, grippy shoes, and water. If you hear thunder on a ridge, head down immediately. Don’t park on the shoulder or enter a restricted road if you don’t have a reservation.

If plans change

If you want to visit Seceda and Alpe di Siusi in one day

At Seceda, see only the upper-station viewpoint, then keep Alpe di Siusi to a short meadow walk. Split them across separate days if you want to hike properly at both places.

If you can’t get a Tre Cime reservation

Don’t try to force your way into the Rifugio Auronzo parking area. Check the actual schedule and seat reservations for Shuttle 444. If that doesn’t work either, spend a relaxed day around Misurina and Cortina.

If rain or strong winds stop the lifts

Swap the mountain summit for indoor activities and a valley walk in Ortisei or Cortina. For the next day’s mountain outing, choose the destination showing better conditions on its webcam.

Small tip

Set aside one day each for hiking at Tre Cime, ridge views at Seceda, and a meadow walk at Alpe di Siusi. Cramming Seceda and Alpe di Siusi into one day leaves little time for cable-car lines or checking the weather.

Final check before departure

  • Check that pickup at Milano Centrale and return at Venezia Mestre can be included in one booking, and confirm the one-way fee and branch hours.
  • Check the rental requirements for a payment card in the main driver’s name, passport, original valid driver’s license, and an International Driving Permit or license translation.
  • Enter your license plate for the Tre Cime Rifugio Auronzo parking reservation, then check the reserved time and 12-hour validity against your return plan.
  • Check the actual first lift, last descent, webcams, and mountain forecast for Seceda and Alpe di Siusi the day before.
  • If you plan to drive to Alpe di Siusi, check the Compatsch access times, P1 and P2 reservations, and any official exceptions for accommodation guests.
  • Save the Mestre return garage address on an offline map and ask the rental company for a route that avoids the ZTL.

As of October 1, 2026. This itinerary assumes Seceda and Alpe di Siusi lifts are running and access to Tre Cime is open, as in summer or early fall. Snow, strong winds, maintenance, and road or parking restrictions can change on the day. In particular, from June 29, 2026, Alpe di Siusi requires advance reservations for P1 Spitzbühl and P2 Compatsch parking, and general uphill vehicle access is restricted from 09:00 to 17:00 on lift operating days. Check the official webcams and lift and vehicle access pages before departure.
