At a glance

  • Zaanse Schans is a good half-day trip for photos.
  • Delft is known for strolling through a small city and its ceramics.
  • Rotterdam offers a kind of modernity that feels completely different from a traditional canal city.
  • For Zaanse Schans, the official guide gives a train journey of about 17 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans, followed by a walk of about 15 minutes to the village. Allow half a day, including waits and walking in both directions, and check the round-trip route and fares for your date with NS. Walking through the public areas of the village is free, but the windmills and some museums charge admission. You don’t need to buy a combination ticket in advance; use the official map to choose one site you want to visit inside and check its hours and price.
  • For the southern day trip, enter these three legs separately in NS: Amsterdam Centraal → Delft, Delft → Rotterdam Blaak, and Rotterdam Blaak → Amsterdam Centraal. Blaak is a convenient destination for Markthal and the Cube Houses; if you save only Rotterdam Centraal, you may miss the final trip across the city. Plan Delft in the morning and Rotterdam in the afternoon, but check the total time for all three legs and the last admission times of paid attractions. If you leave late, drop one city.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day Trip A · Zaanse Schans

Check the outbound and return routes from Amsterdam with NS, then spend half a day in the windmill village. If the indoor attractions are closed, take a walk outside and return to the city.

Day Trip B · Delft and Rotterdam

Combine these two cities only if you’re traveling in the same southern direction. Visit the square and canals in Delft, then choose either Markthal or an architecture walk in Rotterdam before heading back.

  • A quick snack in Zaanse Schans, lunch near a square in Delft, or a meal at a market in Rotterdam may fit your route.
  • Check opening days, wait times, and prices directly with restaurants for your visit date.

How to fit it in

If you have at least three days in Amsterdam, add a day trip and choose whether to explore windmills, ceramics, or modern architecture in the Netherlands.

Reality check

Transport

Amsterdam Centraal is the main station for train day trips to Zaanse Schans, Delft, and Rotterdam.

Time

Choose just one direction for a relaxed day trip. If you combine Delft and Rotterdam, allow plenty of time for walking between stops.

Cost

Train fares are a major part of day-trip costs, so keep meals flexible with options like Rotterdam’s Markthal.

Safety

Many Dutch streets prioritize cyclists. Be careful not to step into a bike lane while walking backward to take a photo.

If plans change

If the windmill interiors are closed

Take a short walk around the outside of Zaanse Schans, return to Amsterdam, and spend more time in the canal district.

Alternative for southern rail disruptions

If there’s a rail disruption in the south before you leave, stay in Amsterdam and cancel the day trip. If you’re already in Delft or Rotterdam, don’t insist on visiting both cities. Cut back your walk in the city where you are and first secure a return route recommended by NS.

Small tip

On a day with two or more nearby stops, walking and luggage storage can be bigger variables than train delays.

Final check before departure

  • Check construction and connections for all three legs with Dutch Railways (NS).
  • Compare opening days for windmill and ceramics sites.
  • Save luggage storage locations and the last train between cities.
  • If you’ve booked a visit inside a windmill or a ceramics experience, make it the anchor for that day trip. Zaanse Schans and Delft–Rotterdam are separate options; if a booking time doesn’t fit, don’t try to combine them on the same day.

The windmills and exhibition spaces at Zaanse Schans may have different opening days depending on the season. Before you visit, check the official guide for which sites are open. Check for train construction through the NS journey planner.
