At a glance

  • Secure your Alhambra reservation first, then plan the rest of the route.
  • In Seville, visit the cathedral and Alcázar, and see a flamenco performance.
  • Ronda has dramatic scenery but is awkward to reach, so plan an overnight stay or a long day trip.
  • Stay 2 nights in Seville, 1 in Córdoba, and 2 in Granada. Since the itinerary ends in Granada, plan transport to your departure airport first. If you have a round-trip flight from Seville, consider adding a night there before flying home.

Food and restaurants

  • Plan for Seville tapas, Córdoba salmorejo, Granada’s free tapas tradition, and Ronda wine across different days.
  • Bring an afternoon snack to account for the late dinner schedule.

How to fit it in

Southern Spain is a better fit than Barcelona for travelers interested in a history shaped by overlapping Islamic and Christian cultures.

Reality check

Transport

Search Renfe separately for Sevilla Santa Justa → Córdoba → Granada. Allow about 1 hour for the Seville–Córdoba train and about 2 hours for Córdoba–Granada. Add 1–2 hours for each leg to cover hotel checkout, getting to the station, and storing your bags at the next hotel. Check your ticket for actual journey and transfer times. Getting from Granada station to the Alhambra is not a straightforward walk, so plan a separate trip by city bus or taxi.

Time

The 5-night, 6-day plan includes 2 nights in Seville, 1 in Córdoba, and 2 in Granada. Use the mornings of Days 3 and 4 to travel between cities, then set aside 3–4 hours for the Alhambra on Day 5, when you have no intercity travel. For a Day 6 departure from Málaga Airport, work backward from your flight using the intercity journey, airport transfer, and the airline’s recommended arrival time. For an early flight, stay in the airport city the night before.

Cost

As a sample budget, if one adult shares a room and sets a lodging share of €60 per day and a food budget of €35 per day, those two categories total €510 for 5 nights and 6 days. These are planning assumptions, not quoted prices. Add the actual Renfe fares for both legs, official admission tickets for the Alcázar, Mosque-Cathedral, and Alhambra, and the final airport transfer. Alhambra tickets vary depending on whether they include the Nasrid Palaces, so check the details separately.

Safety

The biggest risk is the midday summer heat. Drink water often, visit historic sites in the morning, and rest indoors during the hottest hours.

If plans change

If Alhambra tickets are unavailable

Avoid unofficial tickets. Plan a day in Granada around the Albaicín, the cathedral, and the Cartuja Monastery instead.

Alternative plan for a heat warning

Move walks through Córdoba’s lanes and Seville’s squares to the morning, and spend the afternoon indoors with air conditioning or resting at your hotel.

Small tip

Summer afternoons are extremely hot. Visit historic sites in the morning, rest midday, and save walks and meals for the evening.

Final check before departure

  • Check that the passport details and entry time match your Alhambra ticket.
  • Save your intercity high-speed train seat details and station arrival times.
  • Check each city’s high temperatures and locations with free drinking water.
  • Check operating hours and last admission separately for each palace and cathedral. Even if you plan indoor visits to avoid the midday heat, follow the time printed on your ticket for timed entries such as the Nasrid Palaces; do not assume you can arrive later.

Check visiting times and ticket terms on the official sales pages before booking the Alhambra and the Alcázar. Adjust connections between Seville, Córdoba, and Granada using travel-date search results from Renfe and bus operators. Use the ticket for your travel date to confirm actual train times.
