At a glance

  • The 3-night, 4-day plan includes 1 night in Bergen and 2 nights in Flåm. Don’t connect the mountain railway, boat, and flight all on the same day.
  • If the boat is canceled after you reach Flåm, rest in Flåm and keep your booked accommodation and return train. Switch to city museums only if the boat is canceled before you leave Bergen.
  • Day four is for returning by train, not for adding another sightseeing day. If you have an early flight connection, skip the fjord boat on day three and return to Bergen first.
  • For the Bergen→Myrdal leg, check the arrival time of trains on your travel date with Vy, then connect to the roughly 1-hour Myrdal→Flåm mountain railway. Enter each station name separately to check journey times and transfer buffers. Walking time from your accommodation to Bergen Station and from Flåm Station to your accommodation is not included in the train times.
  • The Flåm→Gudvangen boat on day three takes about 2 hours, according to official tourism information. Schedule the return shuttle after the boat arrives, and don’t add a separate Flåm railway round trip that day. Budget for 2 Bergen–Myrdal legs + 2 Myrdal–Flåm legs + 1 boat leg + 1 return shuttle leg + 2 nights in Flåm. Check the same date and group size on Vy and Norway’s Best, and don’t count a leg twice if it’s already included in a package.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1 · 1 night in Bergen

Walk around Bryggen and the harbor, and take in the view from Mount Fløyen if the weather is good. Spend the first night in Bergen.

Day 2 · 1 night in Flåm

Travel from Bergen to Flåm via Myrdal. Set aside the day for the train connections and spend the second night in Flåm.

Day 3 · Boat trip and second night in Flåm

Take your booked Flåm→Gudvangen boat and Gudvangen→Flåm shuttle. Book both legs together and allow at least 15 minutes between the boat’s arrival and the shuttle. Spend your third night of the trip in Flåm.

Day 4 · Return by train

Travel from Flåm to Bergen or your next city via Myrdal. Don’t connect to an early flight on the same day. If you’re flying out of Bergen in the morning, move your third night to Bergen and skip the fjord boat.

Reality check

Transport

Match Bergen→Myrdal trains on Vy with the Flåm Railway. On day three, take the Flåm→Gudvangen Nærøyfjord boat and Gudvangen→Flåm shuttle back to Flåm. The official Norway’s Best shuttle leaves from stop H beside the Gudvangen quay and takes about 20 minutes to Flåm stops A/B. They recommend allowing at least 15 minutes between boat and bus. On day four, return by train from Flåm→Myrdal→Bergen.

Time

Keep indoor options in mind for a rainy day in Bergen, and leave the fjord travel day free of other plans.

Cost

The mountain railway and boat make up a large part of the cost. Check prices before eating at the fish market, and pick up a meal from a bakery or grocery store on travel days.

Safety

At quays and viewing decks, watch for strong winds and slippery wet surfaces. Hold onto your hat and belongings, and board after the boat is docked and staff give instructions. Avoid tickets with tight connections, and don’t try to replace a missed connection by walking along mountain roads.

If plans change

If the boat is canceled in Flåm

Rest in Flåm village and check the change or refund terms for the shuttle and boat. Don’t replace the trip with a mountain hike; keep your return train on day four.

Storm forecast before leaving Bergen

Check train and accommodation cancellation terms first, then switch to museums and indoor activities in Bergen.

Small tip

Check connection times before booking accommodation, since the boat and train transfer times need to line up.

Final check before departure

  • Check Bryggen Museum opening hours and Fløibanen funicular service alongside the weather forecast.
  • Save the bookings and travel times you need for the Flåm Railway.
  • Check the last transport back to your accommodation after the fjord boat and return trip.

Check seats and service for the train, boat, and shuttle on each travel date. If a service is canceled before you leave Bergen, stay in the city. If you have already reached Flåm, secure your Flåm accommodation and return train. Don’t assume you can immediately switch back to indoor activities in Bergen after a cancellation.
