At a glance

  • Fjord boats and mountain railways may not run depending on the season and weather.
  • Plan your time in Oslo first, then arrange Bergen and the fjord trip so they don’t overlap.
  • If heading north, check the connection from your arrival airport to your hotel. On your return day, leave enough time for the actual trip from your hotel to the departure airport.
  • If a storm stops boat service, switch to city museums and rail services confirmed to be running.
  • Visit Tromsø says there is no railway station in Tromsø. The tourism board estimates the Oslo–Tromsø flight at about 1 hour 50 minutes; airport transfers, check-in, and luggage time are extra. The coastal boat from Bergen takes about 64 hours, so it is not a quick alternative for reaching the north on the same day. Add domestic flights, 3 nights of lodging, local activities, and a cancellation contingency to the basic southern itinerary.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Days 1–2 · Oslo

Pair an easy outdoor stop, such as Vigeland Park, with one museum of your choice. Choose the museum after checking its official visitor page for same-day opening hours.

Days 3–5 · Bergen and the fjords

Example: on day 3, arrive in Bergen and stay overnight. On day 4, connect the Bergen Line from Bergen to Myrdal, the Flåm Railway from Myrdal to Flåm, and the Nærøyfjord boat from Flåm to Gudvangen using the actual schedules. To return to Bergen, confirm both the Gudvangen–Voss bus and Voss–Bergen train together on the booking site, then book a second night in Bergen. Keep day 5 for Bergen and getting ready for the next leg. If you can’t confirm the full connection for your date, skip the boat and shorten the plan to a bookable round-trip rail journey or a day in the city.

Optional northern extension · 3 nights, 4 days in Tromsø or return home

Limit the northern extension to Tromsø: allow 1 day for arrival and getting to your hotel, 2 days for the city and a weather-dependent activity of your choice, and 1 day for departure. Check domestic flights and connections from Bergen for your dates, and include time for airport access and luggage. If a weather-dependent activity is canceled, switch to an indoor city attraction. If there’s no room in the schedule for this flexibility, return home from Bergen or Oslo instead.

How to fit it in

In Norway, it’s best to book fjord transport first, then plan your city stays around it.

Reality check

Transport

The mountain railway between Oslo and Bergen, the Flåm Railway, and the fjord boat schedules connect with one another, so plan your booking order first.

Time

After the basic southern cities and fjord itinerary, if you want to add the north, set aside a separate 3-night, 4-day stay in Tromsø. Plan arrival day for the airport-to-hotel transfer and a meal; the second day for the city and one indoor attraction; the third for one booked activity if the weather allows; and the fourth for departure. Don’t squeeze a northern activity into a rail travel day between Oslo and Bergen. For a simple 5–6-day trip, skip the north and focus on the fjord connections and return journey.

Cost

Eating out is one of the biggest expenses in Scandinavia, so keep food costs in check with cafés and grocery stores, apart from one meal at the fish market.

Safety

Bergen gets frequent rain, so bring a waterproof outer layer. Watch your footing on wet rocks and in windy areas at viewpoints.

If plans change

Backup plan if a storm hits the fjords

If a storm stops boat service, switch to Bergen’s city museums and a rest at your hotel. If you need intercity transport, check with Vy to see whether the Bergen Line is running. This route crosses mountains and highlands; it is not a coastal railway. If rail service is also suspended, don’t push ahead with another long-distance leg.

Backup plan if domestic travel in Norway goes over budget

If costs exceed your limit, cut one domestic travel leg.

Small tip

Rain and fog are common, so keep viewpoint visits flexible and arrange them around other plans.

Final check before departure

  • Check admission and departure arrangements for the Oslo city area.
  • For the same visit date, check Bergen–Myrdal, Myrdal–Flåm, the Flåm–Gudvangen boat, and the return connections: the Gudvangen–Voss bus and Voss–Bergen train. Book only options with suitable departure and arrival times and enough time to transfer.
  • For a northern extension, check the connection from the airport to your Tromsø hotel. For your return home, check the actual transport from your hotel to the departure airport after collecting your luggage.

Fjord boats and mountain railways may not run depending on the season and weather. Before departure, check the first leg and final return leg of the Flåm Railway and connecting boat for the same date.
