At a glance
- See Dubrovnik’s walls and the view from Mount Srđ separately.
- At Plitvice, your entry time and choice of walking route matter.
- Zagreb can serve as a buffer city before or after your travels.
- This 4-night, 5-day example includes 2 nights in Dubrovnik → 1 night in Zagreb → 1 night near a Plitvice entrance, and assumes you have a flight from Dubrovnik to Zagreb on Day 3. Add a night if traveling entirely by land or if you’re flying out of Zagreb early.
- A morning flight on Day 5 won’t work with this basic itinerary. If you keep that flight, skip Plitvice and stay in Zagreb on Day 4, or extend the whole trip by a day. Moving the park visit earlier would conflict with the domestic flight on Day 3.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
On arrival day, walk around the Old Town. The next day, allow 2 hours for the city walls. If the weather is good, choose one afternoon viewpoint on Mount Srđ.
Take your confirmed DBV → ZAG flight. At Zagreb Bus Station (Autobusni Kolodvor), check where to board for the bus to the park the next day. Don’t book park admission for this day.
Take a bus from Zagreb Bus Station to Plitvička Jezera and get off at Entrance 1 or 2, as shown on your ticket. Allow at least an hour after arrival before your entry time. Walk a 4–5-hour route, then stay at lodging near the same entrance.
Return to Zagreb on your confirmed bus. Check whether you can make your flight by adding up possible bus delays, the trip to the airport, and the airline’s recommended arrival time. If your flight leaves in the morning, this itinerary won’t work: skip the park and stay in Zagreb the night before, or extend the trip by a day.

Reality check
Don’t expect a quick direct trip between Dubrovnik and Plitvice. For the 5-day example, book a DBV → ZAG flight with Croatia Airlines or another carrier, then buy a separate bus ticket from Zagreb’s terminal to the park. Allow 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours each way for the park bus, plus 30 minutes to wait at the terminal. Check the actual stop and entrance for your bus, operating days, and baggage fees. If the flight times don’t work, start in Zagreb or extend the trip to at least 6 days.
Schedule the city walls and Mount Srđ viewpoint at different times. Set aside a full day for Plitvice after choosing your walking route.
Check admission prices for the city walls and park by visit date and entry time with each operator. Plitvice prices vary by season and entry time, so don’t use a low-season price for a summer budget. For one adult, build a budget with six items: a share of 4 nights’ lodging, 5 days of food, the DBV–ZAG flight, round-trip bus fare to the park, city walls admission, and park admission. If your flights both arrive in and depart from Dubrovnik, you’ll need an extra day to return to the coast.
There’s very little shade on the city walls, so prepare for the heat. The national park’s wooden boardwalks can be slippery when wet, so choose your shoes carefully.
If plans change
Keep your Dubrovnik–Zagreb flight and onward flight connection. Check the change policies for your park lodging, bus, and admission ticket. Switch to lodging in Zagreb and visit only the Old Town and one indoor attraction that’s open.
Rest at your lodging near the park and stay off the boardwalks. Check your confirmed bus to Zagreb and how to reach the stop from your lodging, then take a safe return trip. Don’t arrange a new trip to Split or Zadar.
If you may miss your ticketed entry time, check the park’s change policy and your lodging’s check-in rules first. Don’t try to compress the boardwalk route by rushing through it. If your Zagreb flight is soon, skip the park and stay in Zagreb.
Small tip
Dubrovnik and Plitvice are far apart. Actual travel times are much longer than the straight-line distance on a map suggests.
Final check before departure
- Compare your DBV–ZAG flight and transfers between both airports and your lodging with your booking confirmations.
- Save your round-trip bus tickets between Zagreb Bus Station and the park entrance, and directions between your lodging and the stop.
- Check your park entrance, entry time, and whether your lodging near the park can store your bags.
- If your Zagreb Airport departure on Day 5 is early, skip the park or move your flight back by a day. Don’t keep the basic itinerary’s night near the park on Day 4 and connect to a morning flight the next day.
Plitvice tickets must match your chosen entrance and time slot. If you learn in Zagreb that the park is closed, cancel or change your trip to the park and stay in Zagreb. If you’ve already arrived near the park, don’t enter closed boardwalks; keep your lodging and confirmed return bus to Zagreb. Don’t rush to another coastal city. Check the official opening-hours information for your visit date, entry cutoff, and the last boat and panoramic vehicle departures. If you choose a 4–5-hour route, book a ticket that allows at least an hour between your bus arrival and entry, with enough time to finish before closing. If the shorter winter hours don’t allow this, shorten the route or add a day to visit the park after an overnight stay nearby.
