At a glance

  • Check seasonal water levels and sailing days for river cruises.
  • Confirm the Cologne Cathedral and Rhine section first, then plan it so it doesn’t overlap with your itinerary for one Middle Rhine town.
  • After visiting Trier’s Roman sites, collect your bags and arrive at Trier Hbf with plenty of time to catch confirmed transport to your next overnight destination. This plan does not return you to your accommodation in Cologne from two days earlier or Koblenz from the night before.
  • If river cruises aren’t running, use DB trains and walk along the river instead.
  • KD’s Koblenz panorama cruises offer two round-trip options departing from Landebrücke 2. Tour 1, Old Town–Alt Rhine, takes 70 minutes and costs €14 per adult; Tour 2, Castles and Palaces, takes 2 hours and costs €19 per adult. These are separate tickets. The official 2026 sailing season runs from May 1 to September 27, so the default plan for an October visit is to walk through the Old Town and to Deutsches Eck. Don’t assume boats are running before the next season’s schedule is announced.
  • Use DB to look up Köln Hbf→Koblenz Hbf for the first travel leg and Koblenz Hbf→Trier Hbf for day three, using your visit dates. Journey times and prices vary by train, transfers, and construction, so schedule walks and sightseeing after your train arrives. The budget includes two one-way intercity tickets, one night in Cologne and one in Koblenz, and admission to your chosen tower or Roman site. Add just one of the boat trips above, and only during the sailing season. Also save the departure station and bag collection time for your actual next city after Trier.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1 · Overnight in Cologne

Visit the cathedral in front of Köln Hbf and walk along the river. Choose either the tower or one museum interior, then spend the night in Cologne.

Day 2 · Overnight in Koblenz

Take the train to Koblenz Hbf and drop your bags at your accommodation. Deutsches Eck and the Old Town are the default plan. If you add a cruise, first check that it departs from and returns to Koblenz and confirm the available booking times; cut back on riverside walking.

Day 3 · Trier and onward

Take a morning train to Trier Hbf and first check where to store your bags. Walk around Porta Nigra and the cathedral; visit one Roman site indoors only if you have plenty of time before your onward journey. If you have an early departure, skip Trier and leave directly from Koblenz.

How to fit it in

If you’d like more than just Berlin and Munich on your Germany trip, add three days in the west to broaden its historical scope.

Reality check

Transport

KD boats operate seasonally and on different days depending on the route, so don’t assume you can take a boat from Cologne to Koblenz and back. If you take a boat, coordinate the boarding and disembarking points, the trip from the landing point to the station, and the last train of the day. If the sailing schedule doesn’t work, take a DB train to just one riverside town.

Time

This 2-night, 3-day plan works when your onward transport from Trier on day three leaves in the afternoon or later. On day two, allow a half-day in the morning to travel from Cologne to Koblenz, including hotel and luggage transfers. On day three, allow for the morning trip from Koblenz to Trier and 3–4 hours to explore the city center. If you have an early long-distance departure, extend your Trier stay to the next day or skip it.

Cost

The cathedral itself is free to visit, but budget separately for the tower, museums, and boat travel.

Safety

The area around the cathedral and central station gets crowded, so keep your bags and wallet close to you.

If plans change

River cruise not operating

Walk around Koblenz Old Town and Deutsches Eck, and keep the DB train journey. Don’t chase a sailing by taking a taxi to another landing.

Restricted visits at Cologne Cathedral

Walk along the Rhine and around Cologne’s Old Town, or visit Museum Ludwig if it’s open. Check the official website separately for the current exhibition location of the Romano-Germanic Museum.

Small tip

For a three-day, two-night trip, this order reduces backtracking with luggage: Cologne on Day 1, the Middle Rhine and an overnight stay in Koblenz on Day 2, then Trier on Day 3. Add a night in Trier if onward transport is late or you leave the next day. Don’t combine a round trip from Cologne to Trier with a Rhine cruise in one day.

Final check before departure

  • Check entry and departure details for Cologne Cathedral and the Rhine section.
  • Save the reservations and travel times you need for one town in the Middle Rhine region.
  • Save confirmed transport to your next overnight destination from Trier, allowing time to collect your bags and arrive at the station.

Check seasonal water levels and sailing days for river cruises. Before you leave, also confirm whether the first and last legs are running that day.
