At a glance
- 0:00–0:30 Walk from Dresden Hbf via Prager Straße and Altmarkt to Frauenkirche. If you’re storing your suitcase in a locker, add time for storing and retrieving it, and shorten your sightseeing or shopping time.
- 0:30–1:10 If Frauenkirche is open, visit the interior and look around Neumarkt square. If the interior is closed, don’t linger in the square; continue to the next stop.
- 1:10–1:40 Take in the Elbe River views from Brühl’s Terrace. Then walk past the Fürstenzug mural to the outside of the palace.
- 1:40–3:30 See the exterior of Residenzschloss, the exterior of Semperoper at Theaterplatz, and the Zwinger courtyard and outer galleries, in that order. This schedule does not include the interiors of the palace or opera house.

Google MapsAn optional stop on the way back toward the central station. Skip it if you’re running late.
Google MapsHow to fit it in
Monday through Friday, you could plan to leave the central station at 09:30 and catch a 16:30 train. Use these times as a guide: visit the inside of Frauenkirche at 10:00, start shopping at 13:45, finish shopping at 15:30, and arrive at the central station by 16:00. Check your actual train time and opening hours for the day. Leave the final 30 minutes before departure to collect your bags and check your platform. Both malls are closed on October 3, 2026, so this shopping itinerary does not apply that day.
Reality check
The entire route is on foot. Open the Google Maps links below separately for sightseeing and the return to the station. Use the optional route only if you stop at Centrum Galerie. If the map app changes the stop order, reset it to match the itinerary above.
This schedule includes 3 hours 30 minutes for the Old Town exteriors and courtyards, 45 minutes for a meal, 1 hour 45 minutes for shopping, 30 minutes to return to the central station, and 30 minutes to collect your bags and prepare to board. Museum visits aren’t included.
You can see the exterior sights and Zwinger courtyard without paying admission. General visits to Frauenkirche are also free during its opening hours. Station lockers are paid and, according to the official information, require coins. For a 7-hour itinerary, choose a locker with enough time available; don’t choose a 4-hour option. Art museum admission, the church dome, and opera house tours are separate paid experiences.
For safety, keep your bag closed in busy squares and shopping streets, and leave enough time to walk back to the station with your purchases. Don’t count on arriving at the station just 15 minutes before your train departs.
If plans change
After seeing Neumarkt and the church exterior, continue to Brühl’s Terrace. Don’t retrace your route to visit the church again.
To make time for the Old Masters Picture Gallery, skip Centrum Galerie and shorten your shopping time at Altmarkt-Galerie. Check its Monday closing day and last admission time first. If you want a tour of the Semperoper interior, check the separate schedule and tour availability, then remove at least one stop from this itinerary.
Remove Altmarkt-Galerie and Centrum Galerie from your itinerary, and spend the time at an open art museum or walking along the river. If you leave at 09:30 on October 3, 2026, visit the special event at Neumarkt from 13:45 to 15:30 and arrive at the central station by 16:00. Check whether individual restaurants and cafés are open.
Small tip
Don’t shop on Prager Straße as you pass through it on the way from the central station to the Old Town. You’ll walk along the same street again on your way back.
Final check before departure
- Check your train departure time and platform notices at Dresden Hbf. Plan to arrive at the station 30 minutes before departure, then work backward to set your departure time.
- Check the official schedule for Frauenkirche’s general visiting hours that day and whether the Zwinger courtyard is open.
- Check whether both malls are open on Sundays and public holidays. If they’re closed, replace your shopping time with another visit.
- If you plan to visit an art museum, check its Monday closing day, admission tickets, and last admission time, then shorten your shopping plans.
- Large bags aren’t allowed inside Frauenkirche. Check the size, rental duration, and coin payment requirements for the lockers at Dresden Hbf, and make time to store and collect your bags within the 7-hour itinerary.
On German Unity Day, October 3, 2026, Altmarkt-Galerie and Centrum Galerie are closed. Frauenkirche’s general visiting hours that day are 10:00–11:30, and a special event at Neumarkt runs from 13:00–16:00. Check opening hours again before your visit, since other Sundays, public holidays, and individual stores may have different hours.
