At a glance

  • Santorini suits travelers who prioritize caldera views and cliffside villages. Staying in Fira makes bus connections simpler, but check each accommodation for view rooms and stair access.
  • Consider Naxos if you want time to relax in the port town of Chora and at the beach. Consider Mykonos if Chora, beaches, and evenings out are priorities. If you want a quiet stay, first check the nighttime atmosphere around the beaches and accommodations you’re considering in Mykonos. Don’t try to visit all three islands.
  • The one-island 3-night, 4-day and two-island 5-night, 6-day options are accommodation and travel-day plans. Book the two-island option only after confirming that a night on the mainland before your international departure fits the actual ferry schedule.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

One-Island Plan · Day 1 · Arrival

Leave your bags at your accommodation using your booked transport from the port or airport, then eat near Fira. Don’t make a round trip to Oia for sunset a must on arrival day.

Day 2 · Oia or an Archaeological Site

Check the round-trip operating times and official ticket information for the Fira↔Oia bus, then take a morning walk and return after lunch. On hot days, skip the midday cliff walk and choose an open museum or air-conditioned space.

Day 3 · Departure or an Extra Night

For a 2-night, 3-day trip, collect your bags and travel to the port or airport using confirmed transport. For a 3-night, 4-day trip, spend this day at the Akrotiri archaeological site or at one beach if the weather is suitable, then depart the next day.

Two-Island Extension · 2 Extra Nights

After 3 nights in Santorini, take a ferry that actually operates to Naxos or Mykonos and stay 2 nights. Keep the travel day for getting between ports and accommodations, then spend the next day walking around Chora and at the beach. Afterward, return to your departure city, stay 1 night, and board your international flight.

How to fit it in

If this is your first time in Greece, you may enjoy the trip more by reducing the number of island transfers rather than trying to fit in both Athens and the islands.

Reality check

Transport

Regular inter-island ferries in Santorini use the new port at Athinios. Don’t confuse it with the old port below Fira or the cable car station. Check KTEL’s routes for round trips between Fira Central Bus Station and Oia, and use 30–40 minutes each way as an initial estimate. Separately confirm with KTEL how port buses connect with your ferry time. Allow 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes from your accommodation via Fira to Athinios, including waiting and congestion. If you can’t confirm a bus connection, arrange a shuttle or taxi in advance and record the pickup point and total fare. Check SeaJets or Blue Star Ferries for Santorini→Naxos/Mykonos departure and arrival ports, actual one-way duration, intermediate stops, and cancellation terms. Ferry durations vary by vessel, so don’t use one fixed estimate, and don’t book sightseeing for that day.

Time

For Santorini alone, a 2-night, 3-day trip leaves one full day between arrival and departure. Allow 3 nights and 4 days to visit Oia and the archaeological site at a relaxed pace. If you want two islands, use 3 nights in Santorini plus 2 nights in Naxos or Mykonos—a 5-night, 6-day minimum plan for time on the islands—and separately allow 1 night in Athens or your actual departure city before your international flight. The day you take the ferry, whether the third or fourth day, is a travel day involving checkout, waiting at the port, the ferry, and travel to your next accommodation. If there’s no ferry or you need to include a return to the mainland in a short 5-night trip, choose just one island.

Cost

Based on a check of the official KTEL fare table on 2026-10-03, the regular daytime one-way fare between Fira and Oia is €2.20, and between Fira and Athinios is €2.70. Night and discounted fares are separate, so check the fare again for your visit date. The €4.40 daytime round trip between Fira and Oia is an example that excludes port transportation, lodging, and meals. For a one-island budget, include lodging + transportation to and from the port or airport + daily local round trips + meals + paid attractions. For a two-island budget, add inter-island ferry tickets + transportation from the port on the second island + the ferry or flight from the second island back to the departure city, such as Athens + transportation from the arrival port or airport to your lodging + one night in the departure city. Compare final totals using your actual dates, number of travelers, seats, and luggage conditions.

Safety

Cliffside paths and stairs can be dark and slippery at night. Check your route back to your accommodation during the day.

If plans change

If an Inter-Island Ferry Is Canceled

First check the operator’s change and refund information, then arrange an extra night on your current island and secure your next ferry back to the mainland. At the same time, check the change terms for your accommodation on the second island. Don’t count on making an international flight connection that day.

Indoor Options During a Heat Wave

Cut back on both midday ridge walks and time at the beach, and rest at a museum that’s confirmed open and air-conditioned or at your accommodation. Choose a beach only in the early morning or evening, when the temperature, wind, and waves are suitable.

Small tip

Ferries can be delayed by wind. Do not connect directly from an island to the airport on the day of your international departure; arrive in the departure city no later than the day before and stay one night. If severe weather is forecast, consider an earlier return sailing.

Final check before departure

  • Save the actual ports, one-way duration, seat details, and change terms from SeaJets or Blue Star.
  • Check the latest KTEL routes and price table for Oia round trips. Ask the operator about same-day connections for port buses. Don’t guess if port bus times aren’t published.
  • Don’t plan sunset activities on departure day. Arrange transport that gets you to the port before the boarding cutoff shown on your ferry booking.
  • Before your international departure, allow 1 night on the mainland or in your actual departure city, and check the change terms for your accommodation and ferry in case of a cancellation.

When traveling between islands, check the departure port, arrival port, and that day’s operating status on the ferry operator’s booking page. If a connection is canceled, first plan to extend your stay on the current island rather than rushing to another one.
