At a glance
- It works well to visit Sultanahmet, Galata, and the Bosphorus on separate days in Istanbul.
- If hot-air ballooning is your reason for visiting Cappadocia, allow for weather cancellations in your plans.
- Pamukkale and Ephesus require long-distance travel, so consider combining domestic flights and buses.
- Free prayer visits to mosques and paid sightseeing routes are different. Hagia Sophia’s upper gallery is a paid visitor area; do not assume tourist entry is free just because the prayer area below is free. Other mosques, including the Blue Mosque, also have dress requirements and restrictions on sightseeing during prayer. Before paying, confirm whether the Hagia Sophia History Museum product is a mosque admission ticket.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Stay at one hotel in Istanbul for 4 nights. Keep arrival day light; visit Sultanahmet on day 2, Galata and the Bosphorus on day 3, and choose either the Asian side or a palace on day 4. Depart on day 5.
3 nights in Istanbul → 3 nights in Göreme → 1 night in Istanbul. On day 4, arrive in Göreme by domestic flight and pre-booked shuttle. Try a hot-air balloon ride on day 5; if canceled, try again on day 6 and explore the landscapes. Return to Istanbul on day 7 and depart on your international flight on day 8. The final night in Istanbul is a buffer for return delays. Do not add Pamukkale or Ephesus.

Cappadocia Google MapsHow to fit it in
For a first trip, it is best to limit your plans to Istanbul alone or Istanbul plus Cappadocia.
Reality check
Tell your Göreme hotel which airport you booked: Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) or Kayseri Airport (ASR), and arrange a shuttle. Plan about 1 hour on the road from NAV and about 1 hour 30 minutes from ASR, plus time for luggage, stops at other hotels, and flight delays. For domestic flights, also distinguish between Istanbul airports IST and SAW. If your departure airport changes, allow extra time for city transfers and keep your return to Istanbul the day before your international flight.
Do not schedule a hot-air balloon ride on your arrival day in Cappadocia. Try for your first flight at dawn the next day, with one more possible attempt at dawn the day after that; flights depend on weather and approval from aviation authorities. Leave half a day free for the shuttle and check-in, and shorten the midday outdoor plans to rest at your hotel in the heat. This basic itinerary does not include a domestic flight from Cappadocia on the day of your international flight.
Compare prices before paying for bazaar purchases, and check whether tours include transportation and admission fees, as well as their cancellation terms. Mix in lokanta-style restaurants with posted prices to manage your food budget.
Keep your wallet in a front pocket in the Grand Bazaar and on crowded tram routes. Follow dress rules and prayer times when visiting mosques.
If plans change
After traveling to Cappadocia or the south, leave half a day free after arrival instead of scheduling a tour right away.
Visit outdoor sites at Ephesus and Pamukkale first thing in the morning, then rest at a museum or your hotel midday.
Small tip
Check dress requirements and prayer times when visiting mosques, and compare prices when shopping in bazaars.
Final check before departure
- Check whether your Istanbul flight uses airport code IST or SAW, and book a separate pickup from your arrival airport in Cappadocia to your accommodation.
- Save the cancellation and baggage terms for long-distance tickets.
- Check site opening hours and local temperatures.
- Check opening hours and closure days separately for Istanbul’s palaces and archaeological sites and Cappadocia’s open-air museums. On the day you fly between the two areas, do not pack in paid visits; first arrange transport from the airport to your hotel.
Check official visitor information for Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace, and opening details for the Göreme Open-Air Museum. If a domestic flight or overnight bus changes, cancel any tour planned for your arrival day and prioritize the time needed to reach your hotel.
