At a glance

  • Visit Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque in the same area.
  • Approach the Grand Bazaar as a city experience, not just a place to shop.
  • Plan a Bosphorus cruise around the weather and time of day.
  • At Hagia Sophia, tourists visiting the upper gallery follow a different route from people entering the prayer area. If you want to visit as a tourist, check the official visitor entrance information and ticket for the upper gallery. Don’t assume you can take the same tour by entering via the prayer route. Follow the Blue Mosque’s on-site guidance about prayer times and clothing. On your departure day, prioritize getting from your accommodation to the airport you’re using over sightseeing on the strait.
  • Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays, and the Grand Bazaar is generally closed on Sundays and religious holidays. If day 2 is Tuesday, move the palace visit to the morning of day 3 and skip either the Asian side or the cruise that day. If day 2 is Sunday, move the bazaar visit to free time after arrival on day 1 or to day 3, but don’t make essential shopping depend on a late arrival on day 1. If neither arrangement works, don’t count a closed interior as a visit; switch to a walk around the squares or waterfront instead.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1

After traveling from the airport to your accommodation, walk around Sultanahmet Square to see the exteriors of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and the Hippodrome, then have a meal. Only if you arrive early, check official visiting hours and prayer restrictions, then add either Hagia Sophia’s upper gallery or the interior of the Blue Mosque, allowing an extra 1–2 hours. If you arrive late, move the interior visit to the next day in place of one other scheduled stop.

Day 2

Spend the morning and half the day at Topkapı Palace and the Harem. After lunch, choose only one market: the Grand Bazaar or the Egyptian Bazaar. To visit both markets, shorten your palace visit or split them across different days. If your visit falls on a Tuesday, when the palace is closed, or a Sunday, when the markets are closed, apply the weekday swap plan below first.

Day 3

After visiting Galata and Karaköy, take the Şehir Hatları Karaköy→Kadıköy ferry and walk around one place on the Asian side. Before setting out, check the official schedule for the return Kadıköy→Karaköy ferry too, and leave half a day for the round-trip boat rides, waiting, and walking. If you choose a short Bosphorus cruise instead, check the same-day pier and total duration of a tour departing from and returning to Eminönü, in place of the Kadıköy visit.

Day 4

Prioritize official transport from your lodging to the airport you’ll use, and leave time for check-in. Add a walk near your lodging only if you have a late departure and have confirmed you’ll have time to return to your lodging and then reach the airport.

Food and restaurants

  • Spread kebabs, meze, a Turkish breakfast, baklava, and tea across your itinerary.
  • Kadıköy is a good area to include a meal in a local neighborhood.

How to fit it in

Istanbul flows well if you visit the historic district first, then add the markets and waterfront, followed by the Asian side.

Reality check

Transport

On the T1, Sultanahmet serves Sultanahmet Square, Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı serves the Grand Bazaar, Eminönü serves the Spice Bazaar and ferry piers, and Karaköy serves the Karaköy waterfront. Galata Tower isn’t right by the Karaköy stop; it’s up the hill, so allow extra time to walk. Check the Metro İstanbul route map for directions from your lodging and construction notices.

Time

Four days fit neatly if you set aside one for the historic district, one for the bazaars, and one for the Bosphorus and Asian side.

Cost

According to official information dated October 4, 2026, the ticket for foreign visitors to the upper gallery on Hagia Sophia’s tourist route is €25, and the combined ticket for Topkapı Palace, the Harem, and Hagia Irene is 2,750 TRY. These prices are in different currencies; check them again on the payment screen on your visit day. To visit the Harem at Topkapı, check that it is included in the ticket you choose. Budget separately for regular ferries, airport transportation, and meals.

Safety

In the bazaar lanes, agree on a meeting point with your group. Smile and walk past shoe-shine and carpet touts in the squares.

If plans change

Alternative if Bosphorus boats are suspended

Don’t buy a boat trip on impulse from street touts. Stick to tram and ferry routes that are operating normally, and limit your visits to Karaköy and one destination on the Asian side.

Alternative if mosque access is restricted for prayer

Don’t block the entrance. Visit the Archaeological Museum or Gülhane Park instead, then check the next public visiting time.

Small tip

Check dress guidelines and prayer times for mosque visits. At the bazaars, expect to compare prices.

Final check before departure

  • Check mosque visiting hours and dress guidelines.
  • Save the locations where you can buy and top up a transit card.
  • Check official transport to your lodging for the airport you’ll use.

Check whether Bosphorus vessels are out of service, along with that day’s operating hours and booking availability. If regular ferries are running, visit only Karaköy and one place on the Asian side. If ferries are also suspended, plan land-based visits to Galata and Karaköy by tram and on foot. Don’t buy a ride from touts on a private boat on impulse.
