At a glance

  • Ask your hotel whether it can store your bags after checkout, whether there’s a fee, when you can drop them off and pick them up, and whether you’ll receive a claim ticket. If your last stop is far from the hotel, add the round trip to retrieve your bags to your airport travel time.
  • In-town check-in at Hong Kong Station is available only for designated flights operated by airlines such as Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Mandarin Airlines, Qantas, and Singapore Airlines, and is subject to electronic travel document requirements. Fewer airlines are supported at Kowloon Station, and codeshare flights operated by other airlines may be excluded.
  • In-town check-in typically closes 90 minutes before departure, but that doesn’t mean you should stay in town until then. Check each airline’s counter hours separately, and allow time for airport security and immigration. Before checking a bag, take out anything you’ll need on board.

How to fit it in

Leave your bags at checkout, then visit one nearby place to eat or shop. After picking up your luggage, take the Airport Express or a bus, and arrive at the airport well before your airline’s check-in deadline.

Reality check

Transport

For the Airport Express from Hong Kong or Kowloon Station, add the time it takes to get from your hotel, where you’ll retrieve your bags, to the station. If you take a bus, check which side of the road the airport-bound stop is on and allow for traffic. Airport luggage storage is in the public area on Level 5 of Terminal 1, making it a significant detour if you plan to pick up bags there after sightseeing in town.

Time

For an international flight, this itinerary targets arrival at the airport 3 hours before departure; allow more time if your airline requires it. Before that, add 20–30 minutes to retrieve bags at the hotel, time to reach the station or bus stop, the train or bus journey, and a 30-minute delay buffer.

Cost

Ask in advance whether hotel luggage storage is free. For off-site storage, check prices by bag count, size, and storage duration, as well as opening hours. In-town check-in requires a valid Airport Express journey, and the fare may be deducted when you enter the check-in area, so make sure your card has enough value.

Safety

Don’t check or store your passport, boarding documents, medication, or power bank in your bags. Keep your claim ticket separate and take a photo of your luggage. Don’t book a distant island trip or a mountain excursion on your last day if it could put your flight check-in at risk.

If plans change

If your hotel can’t store your bags

Find an off-site storage location with confirmed prices and opening hours, then keep your last activities nearby. If you can’t confirm the terms, head to the airport early.

If your airline isn’t eligible for in-town check-in

Plan to store your bags at the hotel and check in at the airport. Don’t add a detour to a station just to try in-town check-in before traveling back toward the airport.

Small tip

Don’t rely on old information saying a storage service is available. Recheck size limits, payment methods, and opening hours for your travel date.

Final check before departure

  • Check your airline’s check-in deadline and set a target time to reach the airport.
  • Confirm where you’ll store your bags, when you can retrieve them, and the cost.
  • Save your hotel-to-airport route and rail or taxi alternatives in case of delays.

Check the MTR in-town check-in page for participating airlines, counter hours at each station, and electronic travel document requirements. Don’t assume you can check in downtown just because you’re flying with a low-cost carrier or a Korean airline.
