At a glance
- Secure accommodation in Oban and round-trip transport together before booking your next mainland plans.
- If you hike the Rakiura Track, prepare for hut or campsite bookings, mud, and gaps in phone coverage; this is different from a day walk.
- A kiwi sighting is not guaranteed. Follow the rules for moving around after dark.
- Leave a gap in your plans after Invercargill or Bluff in case your return is delayed.
- A short walk option is DOC Observation Rock. From the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre, the official round trip takes 30 minutes; follow the signs along Ayr Street→Leonard Street→Excelsior Street. Even though most of the route is on paved roads, it includes a steep uphill section, so stick to paths near the village in rain or strong winds. Do not present this walk as a substitute for part of the 3-day hut track.
- Before walking, check the opening hours and track alerts for your travel date at the DOC Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre. Do not assume you can get in-person advice when the center is closed; choose only short routes you have already confirmed are open. On your departure day, prioritize ferry check-in and weather updates over hiking.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Check ferry and flight service alerts and DOC track conditions. Build in at least one time buffer after your mainland connection.
Leave your bags at your accommodation in Oban, take only a short coastal walk, and check the next day’s weather and transport again.
Spend day two on a short walk such as DOC Observation Rock and a meal, then stay a second night in Oban. On day three, return to the mainland on an early booked service and leave a one-night buffer in Invercargill or Bluff. If there is a cancellation, first adjust your bookings for after your return to the mainland.
How to fit it in
Plan a short stay of 2–3 nights in Oban separately from the 3-day Rakiura Track. For a first visit, the village and a short walk are plenty.
Reality check
Take the ferry from Bluff or fly from Invercargill. In Oban, choose to walk, take a shuttle, or use a water taxi according to your plans; book only transport that requires a reservation.
A minimum example for a short Oban visit is: day 1, arrive on the island and stay the first night in Oban; day 2, take a short walk and stay the second night in Oban; day 3, take an early return service and stay one buffer night on the mainland in Invercargill or Bluff. The island stay is 2 nights and 3 days, but allow 3 nights and 4 days if including a buffer night on the mainland. Do not connect a flight home on the same day you return from the island. The 3-day Rakiura Track is a separate itinerary that requires extra hut bookings and accommodation before and after the hike.
Budget separately for round-trip transport, accommodation in Oban, track bookings, shuttles and water taxis, and gear and food. Check weather-related change conditions before paying.
Phone coverage may be limited on the track, so share your plan and consider carrying an emergency communication device. When watching wildlife, reduce light and noise and keep your distance.
If plans change
Extend your stay in Invercargill or Bluff, then adjust your next long-distance connection after checking refunds and changes.
Do not push ahead with part of the Rakiura Track. Switch to officially open walks around Oban and indoor activities.
Small tip
Mud, rain, and drying wet gear can be bigger challenges than the track distance. Prepare shoes and waterproof bags for the conditions you expect.
Final check before departure
- Check cancellation and baggage terms for ferries and flights.
- Save DOC alerts and contact details for checking in at your accommodation.
- Allow plenty of time to connect after returning to the mainland.
Ferries, flights, tracks, huts, and water transport can change with strong winds, rain, tides, and maintenance. Check with operators and Department of Conservation (DOC) alerts before departure.
