At a glance
- Don’t try to see a major museum all at once; choose just 2–3 galleries.
- A simple market lunch outside the midday rush means less time waiting.
- Plan a musical or show for the evening, taking your route back to your accommodation into account.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Choose two galleries to see at the British Museum. Check official opening and entry information, and leave time for security queues.
If the rain is heavy, eat and rest inside the museum. If it eases, head to Covent Garden’s covered Market Building. You’ll be outdoors during part of the walk, so don’t count this as a fully indoor connection.
Finish at the shops and cafés in Covent Garden, then return to your accommodation. Allow 25–30 minutes for the walk from the British Museum to Covent Garden, including wayfinding and traffic lights. If heavy rain continues, search TfL for a bus at that time or skip the trip.
How to fit it in
On rainy or windy days, plan a museum in the morning, a market or shopping area in the afternoon, and a show at night.
Reality check
This basic plan connects the British Museum in Bloomsbury with Covent Garden. Borough Market is in a different area, so don’t treat it as a nearby lunch stop on this route. There’s outdoor walking between the two stops; if the weather is severe, finish at the museum.
Three hours at a major museum, 90 minutes for lunch, and 2 hours at a second indoor stop fill the day. Don’t try to complete two museums just because entry is free.
Permanent collections may be free, but special exhibitions, lockers, and meals cost extra. Set separate budgets in advance for one special exhibition and a market meal.
Take your time on wet stairs and escalators, and keep your bag zipped in crowded free galleries and markets.
If plans change
Check the entry wait. If it’s long, skip the major museum and switch to a smaller indoor venue such as the Wallace Collection and a bookstore.
Skip the second indoor stop and walk for 60 minutes around whichever is closer: the Covent Garden arcades or the Thames riverside.
Small tip
Even free-entry venues may require reservations or security screening, and may close on certain days. Check official updates on the day.
Final check before departure
- Check the museum’s official website for free-entry reservations and security rules.
- Check the market’s opening days and busiest times.
- Save a step-free Tube or bus route connecting the two stops.
Crowds, security procedures, and special exhibition requirements vary even at free museums, and market opening hours differ by day. Choose one museum and one market that’s actually open, then plan the order around TfL routes.
