At a glance

  • Start with the Thames and Westminster on day one to get your bearings.

  • Choose just one evening plan: a performance or a pub meal.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1

On arrival day, walk only around the exterior of Westminster Abbey and Big Ben, through St James’s Park, and past the exterior of Buckingham Palace. If you reach your accommodation late from the airport, see just one area around the Abbey and Big Ben. The interior of the Abbey is not part of the standard itinerary; if you really want to visit, book an official entry time and swap it for one museum visit on another day.

Day 2

British Museum - Covent Garden - dinner in Soho - West End performance

Day 3

In the morning, spend 15–20 minutes seeing Tower Bridge from the outside, then allow 2–3 hours for your reserved visit inside the Tower of London. Have lunch at Borough Market, then spend 1–2 hours at Tate Modern, focusing on just one or two exhibitions that interest you. If you also want to see the exhibition inside Tower Bridge, skip Tate Modern and check the separate admission ticket and hours.

Day 4

First, note which airport you’re using and the arrival time recommended by your airline. Work backward from there, allowing time to collect your bags, travel to the airport, and handle delays. Only if you still have time in the morning, take a short walk in either Notting Hill or Kensington. If time is tight, go straight to the airport.

Food and restaurants

  • Plan Borough Market for lunch, a pub for dinner, and afternoon tea as a separately booked experience.
  • Soho and Covent Garden offer plenty of places to eat before and after a performance.
Borough Market

Market lunch is good for sampling several dishes in small portions. If you plan to walk to Tate Modern, do not lock in your visit without allowing for queues and checking closure days.

Soho · Covent Garden

Before a performance, choose a meal you can finish well before the seating time. For a meal afterward, choose a pub near your route home or a place near your accommodation, and check the last train.

Pub meal

A pub works well for combining a beer with a meal. Afternoon tea is a separately booked experience, and having both on the same day can mean a lot of food.

How to fit it in

For 3 nights and 4 days in London, reduce long trips from east to west and visit the river and museums on different days.

Reality check

Transport

Use the Tube and walking as your default for getting around town, and avoid days with major cross-city trips from east to west. On TfL, use the same contactless card or Oyster card to tap in and out of the Tube, and tap when boarding a bus. Switching payment methods partway through may change how the fare cap is calculated. Airport routes and fares vary depending on whether you use Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, or another airport, so check the actual transport options and accepted payment methods between your accommodation and that airport separately with TfL or the operator.

Time

Divide your 3 nights and 4 days by theme—one day for museums, one for the river, and one for markets and a performance—to keep the itinerary manageable.

Cost

Set your budget first for experiences like performance tickets and afternoon tea, then balance it with market meals and pub food.

Safety

In busy areas around West End nightlife and Underground escalators, check your bag zips and stand on the right.

If plans change

If a key ticketed attraction is sold out

Do not buy unofficial tickets. Switch to a free museum, park, or market in the same area to keep your route on track.

If rail service is unreliable

Avoid crossing the river multiple times. Explore one area on the same side as your accommodation by bus and on foot.

Small tip

On a performance day, eat near the venue to avoid running late.

Final check before departure

  • Book an official time slot for one key paid attraction.
  • Use TfL to save any planned works at your accommodation’s station and a step-free route.
  • Check how to get home after your performance ends, including late-night services.

Check opening hours for palaces, Parliament, and museums, along with performance schedules. Visits and performances may require date-specific booking or sell out; rail works are also frequent. Confirm one key booking for each day and your TfL route the day before.
