At a glance
- Read DOC track grades, alerts, bridge and road conditions, then choose a round-trip route suited to the person in your group with the most limited hiking ability or stamina.
- Leave your route, return time, and vehicle details with someone you know or your accommodation. Carry an emergency communication device for areas without coverage.
- Rāhui and closures are on-the-ground restrictions that must be respected, not considered optional obstacles.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Check DOC difficulty, distance, elevation, and alerts. Choose a round-trip track that the person in your group with the most limited hiking ability or stamina can complete before sunset.
Check weather, roads, parking, and areas without coverage. Leave your plan, vehicle details, and return time with your accommodation or someone you know.
Check your gear and set out early. Turn back as soon as your planned turnaround time arrives or the weather worsens.
How to fit it in
Start with a short track where communication and evacuation are relatively easy, then work up to overnight and alpine routes as you gain experience.
Reality check
Check whether the track starts and ends at the same place, and confirm parking, shuttles, and the last service. Taxis may be hard to find at remote trailheads.
Add time to the official estimate for photos, meals, rest, navigation, and a beginner's slower pace. Work backward to return well before sunset.
Include transport, rented or purchased gear, hut or campsite bookings, a guide, and emergency communications. Don't lower safety standards to save money on gear.
Don't set out if conditions are poor or your gear is inadequate. Never cross a flooded river, and respect closures, rāhui, and instructions on site.
If plans change
Skip ridge and river-crossing routes. Switch to a short lowland walk DOC lists as open, or an indoor activity.
Don't push on toward the summit. Turn back together and don't leave anyone alone.
Small tip
Don't assume your walking pace on flat ground will hold on an alpine route. Work backward from a return to the car park or accommodation well before sunset.
Final check before departure
- Check DOC track descriptions, alerts, and weather.
- Bring water, food, waterproof layers, warm clothing, a first-aid kit, and offline maps.
- Leave your plan, turnaround time, and return time with someone else.
