At a glance

  • From June 7, 2026, self-contained vehicles must meet the fixed-toilet requirement and display a green certification warrant.
  • Even certified vehicles can’t stay overnight on DOC land where camping is prohibited or in local council restricted areas.
  • If your vehicle isn’t certified, it’s safer to book a campsite with toilets, such as an approved DOC or commercial campground.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Before booking the vehicle

Check the green certification warrant, registration status, fixed toilet, and passenger capacity in the rental agreement.

Each afternoon

Check the DOC and local council maps for permission to stay at that day’s location, and look for signs.

Before your next drive

Dispose of wastewater, toilet waste, and rubbish at designated facilities. Don’t stay in restricted areas.

How to fit it in

Use your first and last days for vehicle orientation, grocery shopping, packing up, and returning the vehicle. For each overnight stop in between, confirm and note whether you’ve booked or are allowed to stay.

Reality check

Transport

Check the campervan’s size and transmission, ferry transport, and restrictions on mountain or unsealed roads against the rental terms and your actual route.

Time

Compared with a regular car, you’ll need more time to learn the vehicle, park, pack away equipment, and manage water and wastewater. Keep daily drives short.

Cost

Add up the rental and insurance costs, campsite fees, fuel, gas and electricity, bedding, cleaning, wastewater disposal, and one-way drop-off fees.

Safety

Don’t park or stay overnight where it’s not allowed. Before bed, check ventilation, gas, and the brakes. Don’t keep driving a large vehicle when tired.

If plans change

If you’re unsure whether freedom camping is allowed

Don’t guess and park there. Go to a bookable DOC or commercial campground instead.

If the campground is full

Don’t spend the night on the roadside. Find the next legal campsite or a motel and stop driving.

Small tip

Don’t rely on map app reviews alone to decide whether free camping is allowed. The current rules of the land manager and local council take priority.

Final check before departure

  • Check the vehicle certification and any overnight restrictions in the rental agreement.
  • Save your first-choice legal campsite and one backup for each day.
  • Save wastewater disposal points, drinking water, and fuel locations for offline access.

Verification date: 2026-07-30. From 2026-06-07, a green certification warrant is the standard for new self-contained vehicle certification. Local bylaws and on-site prohibition signs take priority over certification.
