At a glance

  • If the midnight sun is your goal, include time above the Arctic Circle. Don’t use long summer days in the capitals and the sun staying above the horizon to mean the same thing.
  • If the aurora is your goal, narrow the trip to two or three destinations among northern Norway, Finnish Lapland, and Iceland, leaving time to wait through cloudy weather.
  • The summer plan sets aside four days for travel between countries and keeps the last two days in Iceland as weather buffer days. In winter, account for possible flight and ferry cancellations by visiting fewer countries, and avoid a long-distance transfer right before your trip home.
  • Drive in Iceland only when the day’s official road and weather updates indicate it’s safe. If conditions worsen, return to your accommodation area.
  • If you're visiting all five countries in summer, first allocate overnight stays among Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo/Bergen, and Iceland. Count cross-border days as travel days, not sightseeing days. If you have less than 3 weeks, make Iceland a separate trip or cut the itinerary to about three cities so you don't lose a day each to flights, ferries, and trains.
  • If seeing the Northern Lights in winter is your goal, don't reuse a summer itinerary that visits five capitals. Stay several nights at one base in northern Norway, Finnish Lapland, or Iceland, and minimize travel to other countries. Stay overnight the day before your return flight to allow for domestic flight or ferry delays.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Days 1–4 · 3 nights in Copenhagen

Split your time between Nyhavn and the city center and museums. On day 4, travel by train via København H → Malmö C → Stockholm Central. DSB lists the Malmö–Stockholm X2000 journey at about 5 hours, so allow extra time for the trip from Copenhagen and the connection.

Days 4–7 · 3 nights in Stockholm

Split your time between the Old Town and museums. On day 7, fly from Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) to Helsinki (HEL). Check Finnair’s official date search for direct flights and the actual airports, and allow separate time for getting to the airport and checking in.

Days 7–10 · 3 nights in Helsinki

Visit the city center and Suomenlinna on separate days. On day 10, check for a direct HEL → Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) flight. Finnair lists the flight time as about 1 hour 25–35 minutes, but the full trip from one accommodation to the next takes much longer, so leave the afternoon unscheduled.

Days 10–14 · 4 nights in Oslo

Split your time between the city center and harbor, and the museums. Skip Bergen and fly from OSL to Keflavík (KEF) on day 14. Check Icelandair’s date-specific listings for direct flights and baggage terms. KEF is different from RKV, Reykjavík’s domestic airport.

Days 14–21 · 7 nights in Reykjavík

Use the capital area as your base, with rest days between outings. Choose a Golden Circle or South Coast day tour on a day when conditions allow. Limit the South Coast outing to a day trip that goes no farther than the booked tour’s turnaround point, such as Vík; don’t extend the trip all the way to the glacier lagoon. Stay in the capital area on days 19–20 as weather buffer days, then depart from KEF on day 21.

Winter Plan · Separate Trip

If the aurora is your goal, choose only two or three destinations among northern Norway, Finnish Lapland, and Iceland. Don’t reuse this summer itinerary. Plan a separate flight itinerary with at least 3 nights in each region and a buffer day before your return flight.

How to fit it in

A good fit if you have nearly three weeks off and want to experience both city design and northern nature.

Reality check

Transport

The basic summer connections are by rail from København H → Malmö C → Stockholm Central, then by air from ARN → HEL, HEL → OSL, and OSL → KEF. Check DSB and SJ for rail, and Finnair and Icelandair for flights, using the same travel dates. Add city-to-airport transfers, check-in, and baggage claim separately, and leave at least half a day free on each flight travel day. If you want to take the overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki, make that a separate alternative to the flight and recalculate port transfers and the night aboard. For airport connections, check schedules for your dates; use about 18 minutes for the Arlanda Express between Stockholm Central and ARN, about 30 minutes for the HSL airport train between Helsinki Central Station and HEL, and about 20 minutes for Vy or Flytoget between Oslo S and OSL. From KEF, the Flybus takes about 45 minutes to Reykjavík BSÍ, or about 1 hour 15 minutes if your plan includes hotel pickup. For your departure day, work backward from the airline’s recommended airport arrival time, allowing for the bus or pickup and possible delays. Plan to arrive at the airport 3 hours before departure as a starting point, follow your flight’s instructions if they call for more time, and allow a longer buffer in bad weather after checking service the day before.

Time

The basic itinerary is 20 nights and 21 days: 3 nights in Copenhagen + 3 in Stockholm + 3 in Helsinki + 4 in Oslo + 7 in Reykjavík. Don’t book timed attractions on the four days of travel between countries. Don’t cut the capital-area buffer days on days 19–20 to fit in a long South Coast trip; if you have only 18–19 days, visit fewer countries.

Cost

Build the budget by adding 20 nights of accommodation, 1 train segment between countries, 3 flight segments, the actual one-way transport between each city center and airport (or airport and city center), baggage fees, meals, and any optional Iceland tours. Compare flights by total cost including checked baggage and change terms, not just the advertised lowest fare. Mix in accommodation with a kitchen and days without travel, and set aside money for an extra night if a service is canceled. The calculation below excludes the inbound flight from your departure city to Copenhagen and the outbound flight from KEF to your return destination, so add those separately. Formula for one person's local trip costs, excluding those inbound and outbound flights: (one room-night cost for each city × nights in that city ÷ number of travelers) + 1 train segment + total cost of 3 flights including baggage + actual airport and city transport + daily meal cost × 21 days + optional tours + emergency accommodation. The nights in each city are 3, 3, 3, 4, and 7. Fill in actual prices from your cart; if the total exceeds your budget, reduce the number of countries first.

Safety

In winter, check for road closures and weather alerts just before departure, and avoid traveling at night.

If plans change

Alternative if an international flight between countries is canceled

First secure accommodation in your current city and rebooking with the carrier. Check whether you can still make your final connection to depart from KEF even if you cut sightseeing days in the next city. If not, discuss changing your departure flight with the airline. Don’t try to make up lost time by traveling to another airport at night during a storm.

What to do on a cloudy winter aurora night

Stay in the region where you’re already based, visit an indoor attraction, and rest while you wait for the next night. Aurora sightings aren’t guaranteed. Don’t add a long drive at night to get away from the clouds.

Small tip

Don’t drive both Rovaniemi and southern Iceland in winter. Take a tour for one of those legs.

Final check before departure

  • For the summer plan, book the København H–Stockholm Central rail leg and the ARN–HEL–OSL–KEF flights in travel-day order. Don’t confuse ARN, OSL, or KEF with other airports based only on the city name.
  • For the winter plan, choose only two or three destinations among northern Norway, Finnish Lapland, and Iceland, and allow at least 3 nights in each region.
  • Check rail connections and each flight’s airport, baggage, and change terms. Keep the next city’s accommodation check-in time in mind, and leave two buffer days in the capital area before your return flight.
  • Drive in Iceland only if the official road conditions on your departure day indicate it’s safe.

The midnight sun and aurora require different seasons and places to stay. In summer, reduce travel between capitals. In winter, visit fewer countries because of limited daylight, road conditions, and possible cancellations, then set your departure dates according to official transport and road updates.
