At a glance
- The route travels through Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece, in that order. Use Lisbon, Barcelona, and Rome as single bases, and travel only between Athens and Naxos in Greece.
- Check for direct flights on your travel dates from Lisbon to Barcelona, Barcelona to Rome, and Rome to Athens. Allow two nights in Athens before your return flight to account for possible island ferry cancellations.
- Don’t schedule paid activities with restrictive refund policies the day after crossing a border. In summer, reduce outdoor time around midday and check that your accommodation has air conditioning and whether attractions offer early entry.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Stay in one Lisbon accommodation and include just one day trip. The day before, check the departure airport and baggage conditions for your direct flight to Barcelona on day six.
Travel on your booked direct flight. Keep arrival day to checking in and having dinner nearby.
Stay in one Barcelona accommodation. Check the departure airport and baggage conditions for your direct flight to Rome on day 11.
Travel on your reserved direct flight. On the following day, the 12th, schedule only a free walk or activities that can be changed; book timed-entry visits with restrictive refund policies for day 13 or later.
Stay in one Rome accommodation and spread out your sightseeing days. The day before, check your direct flight to Athens on day 17 and how to get to the airport.
Travel on your booked direct flight. Don’t connect to an island ferry on the same day you arrive in Athens.
Explore central Athens. Check the port, departure time, and service notices for your ferry to Naxos on day 20.
Stay on one island: Naxos. On day 22, check the ferry to Athens the following day and your options if it’s canceled.
Return to Athens on your reserved ferry. If a cancellation forecast is issued before departure, consider returning on an earlier sailing. If the ferry is canceled on the day, compare the ferry operator’s alternative service with seats on flights confirmed to be operating. If neither is available, check the conditions for changing your flight home.
Keep the two-night mainland buffer in Athens before departure. Head to the airport in time for your flight on day 25.

Reality check
Fly from Lisbon to Barcelona, Barcelona to Rome, and Rome to Athens. For Athens and Naxos, check the ferry operator’s schedule for your travel dates, and keep the two nights in Athens before departure.
This plan includes four countries and one Greek island over 25 days. If you have 24 days or fewer, save either Portugal or Greece for a separate trip and keep the planned nights at the remaining bases.
Book famous archaeological sites and island accommodation through official sellers, and avoid unofficial resale sites.
During summer heat waves, reduce time at outdoor archaeological sites around midday and plan for water, shade, and rest.
If plans change
If you learn of a possible cancellation before the 22nd, shorten your stay on Naxos and return to Athens early. If your return sailing on the 23rd is actually canceled, look for a seat on the next boat or a confirmed flight. If neither is available, it will be difficult to keep both your two nights in Athens and your scheduled flight home, so check the terms for changing your ticket.
During extreme heat, reduce time in inland cities and shift activities to the morning or evening.
Small tip
Adding Santorini, Mykonos, and the Amalfi Coast all together means repeated, expensive coastal transfers. Keep just one or two.
Final check before departure
- Check the airports and total cost including baggage for the Lisbon–Barcelona, Barcelona–Rome, and Rome–Athens flight segments on the airlines’ official websites.
- Check the ports, departure times, and change conditions for the Athens–Naxos round-trip ferry with the operator.
- Check the official sellers’ admission conditions for your visit date and any heat advisories for the Colosseum and Acropolis.
- Include the two-night mainland buffer in Athens in your accommodation booking before departure.
The city allocation is a 25-day plan and does not specify flight or ferry times. Search for the three international flight segments and the Athens–Naxos round-trip ferry on your travel dates, then book timed-entry tickets.
