Don’t set aside a long lunch in Assisi. Have a meal somewhere between the basilica and Piazza del Comune. Don’t prioritize a restaurant reservation over your return train.

Reality check
Travel between Zurich, Lucerne, Bern, and Lausanne on regular SBB trains, and take round trips from Bern to Thun and Interlaken and Brienz. Check seat requirements separately for the international train from Lausanne to Milan and the Italian high-speed train. From Roma Termini to Assisi station, choose a direct train or one with a transfer in Foligno.
Count Zurich to Lucerne, Lucerne to Bern, and Bern to Lausanne as full days for travel and sightseeing. Leave 11–13 hours for the Interlaken and Brienz day trip, including around 5 hours of round-trip train travel. Set aside a full travel day for Lausanne to Florence as well.
Accommodation and restaurant prices vary by date, party size, refund terms, and city tax. For travel within Switzerland, compare pass, Saver Day Pass, and point-to-point ticket prices on the official sales site for the same dates, then choose one way to buy. Add international and Italian high-speed train fares and any required seat reservations to calculate your total transport cost.
Keep your phone and wallet in front of you at busy stations in Zurich, Florence, and Rome. For the Interlaken and Brienz day trip, leave at least two train options for returning to Bern. In Assisi, leave a spare departure for both the return bus and train.
If plans change
Replace Day 6 with Bern museums and an arcaded walk, or swap the Day 5 Thun itinerary with the Day 6 itinerary. Don’t try to fit in a lake boat trip.
Move the day trip to Day 16 or choose a smaller town closer to Rome, such as Orvieto. Cancel the long day trip on a strike day.
Make Day 11 in Florence and Day 17 in Rome market, park, and neighborhood stroll days.

- Save offline your connections between Assisi station and the old town and your return train to Rome, choosing a combination that avoids the last service on each leg.
Swiss intercity trains and Italian high-speed trains have different reservation requirements. Check the schedules, operating hours, and service notices for your travel dates on SBB and Trenitalia. Book timed entry for the Duomo, Uffizi, Colosseum, and Vatican Museums through their official ticket offices. For safety, keep border-crossing days focused on completing your final train connection and don’t schedule additional sightseeing.
