  • The Zurich Card includes second-class public transport in designated zones and the airport connection. Note the difference between free admission to the National Museum and Museum of Design, free admission to Kunsthaus Zürich's permanent collection, and the additional charge for special exhibitions. Check the official sales information for each venue for the exhibitions and events on your visit date and the card's coverage.
  • One question can guide the day: How did cantons with different languages and religions become a federation? Why is information easier to read when it is arranged simply? Why did artists then challenge that order? Consider these questions in turn.
  • Zurich was a customs and logistics hub in Roman times, known as Turicum. In the Middle Ages, guilds took part in running the city. The Reformation began with Zwingli's sermons at the Grossmünster in 1519. As you pass Lindenhof and the churches, trace how a medieval Catholic city became a city of the Reformation.
  • For a meal, look for Zuercher Geschnetzeltes, veal sautéed in cream sauce, served with Roesti, a potato pancake. For something sweet, a small filled macaron such as Spruengli's Luxemburgerli makes a good treat after a walk.
  • THE FLAG Zurich is an example of accommodation to show the starting route for this itinerary. Before booking, compare prices, room options, cancellation terms, and travel time to Altstetten station.
  • This itinerary includes selected exhibits at all three museums. Walking distances vary with your lodging and any detours, and the route includes Old Town hills. If you want longer visits at the two morning museums, skip the Museum of Design or move Kunsthaus Zürich to another day.
  • If you'd rather walk than visit museums, go from the main station along Bahnhofstrasse to Lindenhof, St. Peter's Church, Fraumünster, Münsterbrücke, and Grossmünster. You can explore more of Niederdorf's lanes, then return to the river and finish by the lake. Allow 2–3 hours for this alternative focused on exteriors and breaks; it is not an add-on to the full museum itinerary above.

Suggested itinerary

Historicism-style architecture of the Swiss National Museum beside Zurich main station
10:00–11:10 AM · Swiss National Museum

Start at the National Museum beside the main station to see how Switzerland became a country. Rather than trying to cover all the archaeological exhibits, focus first on history and crafts from the Middle Ages onward. Look for signs connecting the formation of the Confederation, the Reformation, and the federal state of 1848. Head to the next museum at 11:10 AM.

여기서 꼭 볼 것
  • See how several cantons went from a loose alliance to a federation. Consider what united regions with different languages and religions.
  • Prioritize the Reformation, the division between Catholic and Protestant regions, and the creation of the federal state in 1848.
  • Look at armor, weapons, religious statues, stained glass, furniture, clocks, textiles, and crafts to find connections between everyday culture and industry.

11:20 AM–12:10 PM · Museum of Design

At the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich's main building on Ausstellungsstrasse, choose the graphic design or poster exhibits on view that day and the Swiss Design Lounge. Spend these 50 minutes noticing how type, images, and empty space guide the order in which you read information, rather than trying to see as many works as possible.

  • In Swiss graphic design, look for layouts that prioritize conveying information over decoration, using grids and empty space.
  • Look at letter spacing and alignment to see why Swiss typography, including Helvetica, can feel easy to read.
  • Compare choices that prioritize limited colors and type, function, and durability in posters, furniture, and everyday objects.

12:10–1:00 PM · Travel to the Old Town

Leave the Museum of Design at 12:10 PM and check the route for your visit date from around the main station to Paradeplatz in ZVV. Allow 50 minutes for travel, boarding waits, a restroom stop, and a break, arriving by 1:00 PM. Adding a lake boat trip would delay the rest of the day, so it is not part of this basic itinerary.

Lunch spots around Bürkliplatz and Old Town lanes
1:00–1:40 PM · Lunch

Have lunch near Paradeplatz from 1:00 to 1:40 PM. Zuercher Geschnetzeltes is veal sautéed in cream sauce and is often served with Roesti. If the wait is long, choose a quick meal to keep time for the art museum in the afternoon.

  • After the meal, check the route toward Lindenhof first.
  • If you want Zuercher Geschnetzeltes and Roesti, check that both names appear on the menu.
  • Start the Old Town walk near Lindenhof at 1:40 PM.

Plan for about a 10-minute walk from Paradeplatz to Lindenhof after lunch. This walk is included in the 70 minutes for the Old Town.

Spire of an Old Town church in Zurich, seen across the Limmat River
1:40–2:50 PM · Old Town walk following the Reformation

Walk from Paradeplatz to Lindenhof, St. Peter's Church, Fraumünster, Münsterbrücke, and Grossmünster, crossing from the west to the east bank of the river. Allow 70 minutes for walking, hilltop views, and church exteriors. If admission and events allow, take a brief look inside Fraumünster and at the Chagall windows; if there is a long wait, stick to the exterior. The tower climb is not included.

여기서 꼭 볼 것
  • At Lindenhof, look for traces of Turicum and take in the Old Town view. Then consider how this was once the site of a palace and a fortress.
  • See the large clock face on St. Peter's Church from outside, then look at figures and biblical scenes in the Chagall windows at Fraumünster.
  • Look for traces of Zwingli and the Reformation at Grossmünster, and compare its restrained interior with Fraumünster.

The 70 minutes for walking and sightseeing start after lunch. Leave Grossmünster at 2:50 PM, then walk about 5–10 minutes to the art museum entrance.

Kunsthaus Zürich at Heimplatz
3:00–5:40 PM · Kunsthaus Zürich

Spend 2 hours and 40 minutes, from 3:00 to 5:40 PM, choosing works that interest you at Kunsthaus Zürich. This time includes entry and storing your belongings. Use the official visitor guide and ticket-office map to check where works by Giacometti, Hodler, Monet, and others are displayed that day, and focus on one or two areas of the building or galleries. Don't assume every work is always on display. Even on days when the museum closes at 6:00 PM, finish by 5:40 PM, about 10 minutes before the galleries close.

여기서 꼭 볼 것
  • If time is short, see Giacometti, Hodler, Monet, Cézanne, and Van Gogh, Picasso and Munch, then Dada works, in that order. View Giacometti's slender figures once from the front and once from the side; step back a few paces to see repetition and symmetry in Hodler's work.
  • Monet explores light, Cézanne structure, Van Gogh emotion, and Picasso changes in viewpoint. Look for how Cézanne's color planes and structure point toward later Cubism.
  • In Munch's work, look for anxiety and loneliness rather than just outward appearances. With Dada-related works, consider why artists in Zurich rebelled against established art and social order during the war in 1916.
  • At the Bührle Collection, consider the ownership history as well as the beauty of the paintings. Discussions of wartime transactions and provenance raise the question of who came to own the works.
대중교통

The walk from Grossmünster to Kunsthaus Zürich takes about 5–10 minutes. After finishing your visit at 5:40 PM, take a tram with the card to your lodging or a restaurant for dinner.

History and context

From Turicum to a guild city and a city of the Reformation

Below Lindenhof was the harbor and customs post of Roman-era Turicum. In the Middle Ages, guilds took part in city politics. Zwingli's sermons, which began at Grossmünster in 1519, led to the Reformation. This day follows Lindenhof, St. Peter's Church, Fraumünster, Münsterbrücke, and Grossmünster in order. Consider the era represented at each place, while remembering that the city's history did not develop in only one direction.

Walk to see where the river meets the lake

From the area north of the main station, where the National Museum is located, travel to Bürkliplatz to see where the narrow Limmat River meets Lake Zurich. This basic plan uses trams or walking. Limmat River cruises and Lake Zurich boats are different routes, so if you want to add one, check separately with ZSG for service on your visit date.

How to fit it in

THE FLAG Zurich in Altstetten is an example of a place to stay. Look up the actual route from your lodging to Zurich HB in ZVV and leave so you arrive at the station 20–30 minutes before your 10:00 AM National Museum entry. The day runs from the National Museum to the Museum of Design, lunch at Paradeplatz, Lindenhof, St. Peter's Church, Fraumünster, Münsterbrücke, Grossmünster, and Kunsthaus Zürich. This is an example for a day when you want to see history, design, and art. To spend more time at the National Museum, skip the Museum of Design and keep the afternoon departure times.

Reality check

Transport

The 24-hour Zürich Card is valid for 24 hours from the date and time you specify when buying it; your first ride does not set the start time. Show the QR/PDF ticket on second-class public transportation within the valid zones. This itinerary combines transportation to and from your lodging and around the city with museum benefits. Limmat River cruise benefits and actual service are separate, so if you want to take a boat, check ZSG’s service status for that day.

Time

10:00 AM–5:40 PM is an example of a 7-hour-40-minute day. National Museum, 70 minutes + Museum of Design, 50 minutes + travel between museums and around the city, with breaks, 70 minutes + lunch, 40 minutes + Old Town, 70 minutes + Kunsthaus Zürich, 160 minutes = 460 minutes. The first museum's 70 minutes covers only selected history exhibits. If the morning entry queue is long or you want to spend more time at one venue, skip the Museum of Design and keep lunch at 1:00 PM and the art museum at 3:00 PM. Travel from your lodging to the main station, and dinner and the return trip after 5:40 PM, are outside this total.

Cost

As of October 4, 2026, the official fare table lists the adult Zürich Card at CHF 29 for 24 hours and CHF 56 for 72 hours. New prices take effect from December 13, 2026. Recheck the amount charged based on the date you start using the card, not the purchase date. Compare the card with the regular adult ticket for the National Museum (CHF 13), one Design Museum location (CHF 15), and the transportation costs for each. The card includes free admission to both museums. At the Kunsthaus Zürich, the card includes free admission to the permanent collection, and the ticket desk lists an additional CHF 7 for special exhibitions. Regular adult admission to the interior of Fraumünster, including the Chagall windows, is CHF 5; the Zürich Card includes free admission. CHF 29 for the card plus CHF 7 for a special exhibition at the Kunsthaus Zürich, or CHF 36, is an example if you choose that option; it excludes lunch, dinner, and separate services. The Kunsthaus Zürich collection is free to general visitors on Wednesdays, so separately total the transit pass you would use without the card and the remaining admission costs.

Safety

Keep your bag closed at the main station and on trams, and don't leave your phone on a table. When swimming by the lake, follow designated areas and local guidance. Avoid returning alone late at night through riverside lanes.

If plans change

If it rains all day

Spend the morning at the National Museum and more time at Kunsthaus Zürich in the afternoon. Make brief visits to Lindenhof and the cathedral when the rain eases. You can still use the card's transit and museum benefits if you cancel the boat.

If visiting on a Monday

Many museums are closed, so the card may be less worthwhile. Instead, focus on Uetliberg, the Old Town, and the two cathedrals. If you take a boat, check whether the ZSG mini lake cruise departing from Bürkliplatz or a short lake cruise is running on your visit date and included with the Zürich Card. Do not assume that the card includes all longer lake cruises and special services; compare the price again with individual transit tickets and any surcharges.

If walking is difficult

Connect the main station, Helmhaus, Bellevue, and Paradeplatz by tram, and reduce the Lindenhof climb and long lakeside walks.

Alternative for a day when you want to take a Limmat River boat

This basic day plan works with trams and walking, without a boat. If the boat is a priority, skip the Museum of Design and rebuild the itinerary after checking ZSG's service status, boarding wait, and journey time for that day. If service is suspended, return to the original plan with a tram to Paradeplatz and lunch.

Small tip

The 24-hour pass is valid for 24 hours from the date and time you specify when purchasing; it does not automatically expire at midnight. If you want to use it for the airport trip the next day, you must complete your airport train journey within 24 hours of the specified start time. Many museums are closed on Mondays, so don’t follow this itinerary as written; instead, focus on the boat and Uetliberg.

Final check before departure

  • THE FLAG Zurich is an example of accommodation; check the total price, room type, and cancellation terms for your actual dates.
  • Check the hours and closing days for the Museum of Design, National Museum, and Kunsthaus Zürich.
  • Choose the card's start time and calculate whether your train to the airport the next day falls within the 24-hour period.
  • Save the tram route and the museums' last admission times. If adding a boat, check ZSG's service restriction notices as well as the timetable PDF.
  • Before adding a Limmat River boat, check ZSG's service status and timetable, and include time to wait for departure.
  • Walking along the river instead of taking a tram increases the distance on foot, so bring comfortable shoes, a small umbrella, and water.
  • If you've reserved dinner, calculate travel time from the art museum, using 5:40 PM as the end of your visit.

Official hours and admission information were checked on October 4, 2026. The basic plan is a day visiting three museums, Tuesday through Sunday; the National Museum and Museum of Design open at 10:00 AM. Kunsthaus Zürich closes at 6:00 PM Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday through Sunday, and at 8:00 PM on Thursday. Galleries close about 10 minutes earlier. Check again for public holidays and special closures on your visit date. The boat is not included in the basic route.
