At a glance
- Man Mo Temple is at 124–126 Hollywood Road, and its operator, Tung Wah, lists usual hours of 8:00–18:00. Plan a quiet 20–30-minute visit that leaves worshippers’ paths clear. If incense smoke bothers you or makes you cough, spend less time indoors and look at the building from outside.
- Tai Kwun is at 10 Hollywood Road. The complex is open 8:00–23:00, but JC Contemporary is listed as open Tuesday–Sunday, 11:00–19:00. Don’t assume you can see the same exhibitions on Monday, or that exhibitions are open just because the complex is open late.
- Allow about 15–25 minutes to walk between the two places along Hollywood Road. Exploring the lanes and waiting to cross take extra time. If you’re going uphill to Tai Kwun from Hong Kong or Central Station, check the official access information about the Mid-Levels Escalator connection. Separately check whether you can take the same escalator downhill, since its direction may differ.
- If you choose a special exhibition, performance, or guided tour, check its program page for prices and booking terms, then plan the route before and after around its start time. Separating simple building visits from paid programs makes the budget easier to estimate. Choose one place to eat along the lanes, and visit Man Mo Temple first on a night with a late performance.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Sheung Wan Station → Man Mo Temple at 124–126 Hollywood Road, 20–30 minutes → walk along Hollywood Road, 30–45 minutes
Tai Kwun at 10 Hollywood Road → buildings and courtyard, 45 minutes → add 60 minutes if you choose an exhibition that opens after 11:00, Tuesday–Sunday
Lunch or a break at Central Market → Central Station. On Mondays, skip JC Contemporary and finish with a walk around the general areas.
How to fit it in
See Man Mo Temple and the lanes in the morning, then use Tai Kwun’s exhibitions and indoor spaces to escape the afternoon heat.
Reality check
Tai Kwun is at 10 Hollywood Road, and Man Mo Temple is at 124–126 Hollywood Road. Walk west along Hollywood Road from Tai Kwun to the temple, or start on the Sheung Wan side and walk in the other direction. Tai Kwun’s official visitor information also lists a footbridge entrance connected to the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator.
Allow 2–3 hours for both places and the surrounding lanes, plus another hour if you plan to see an exhibition.
Plan to visit the lanes and general areas of Tai Kwun without a paid program. Special exhibitions, performances, and tours have different prices; add them separately on the booking page. Check prices if you buy incense or offerings at the temple, and budget for meals and transport separately from admission.
If incense smoke or the steep lanes bother you, shorten your visit and use elevators or escalators.
If plans change
Visit only Tai Kwun’s indoor spaces and Central Market. Move the temple and lanes to another day.
JC Contemporary is open Tuesday–Sunday, so leave it out of a Monday itinerary. See Tai Kwun’s outdoor architectural spaces and narrow your visit to a historical exhibition with confirmed opening hours or a nearby indoor café.
Small tip
If you keep walking along Hollywood Road and the Mid-Levels Escalator, the route becomes a half-day outing.
Final check before departure
- Check Tai Kwun’s official visitor information for buildings, exhibitions, and guided tours open that day. If you have a special exhibition booking, plan the route around its entry time.
- The walk between Tai Kwun and Man Mo Temple includes hills and crossings. If you have knee problems, check step-free access and places to rest instead of relying on the distance shown on a map.
- Man Mo Temple is still used for worship. Watch your step over thresholds and around incense burners, don’t block worshippers, and follow on-site instructions about photography and events.
On October 3, 2026, I checked Man Mo Temple’s usual hours of 8:00–18:00 and Tai Kwun’s area and exhibition hours with the operators. Check for special temple dates and events, and temporary restrictions in individual Tai Kwun buildings. Tai Kwun may also operate with restrictions during severe weather alerts, so don’t assume you can automatically go there as an indoor alternative.
