At a glance
- Check Hamarikyu’s last admission time, temporary closures, and seasonal conditions. The garden is more rewarding when you slow down around the tidal pond and teahouses instead of rushing through for photos.
- Shiodome’s pedestrian decks overlap with underground passageways, so it’s easy to lose your bearings above ground. Save both your destination building and the exit for Shimbashi Station, and check on-site signs for connections closed due to construction.
- Shimbashi has many restaurants and bars popular with office workers, but smaller venues vary in their smoking rules, seating, and payment options. Check for an English menu and the total price before ordering.
- You can pair this with breakfast at Tsukiji, but first consider where to store your market purchases and whether they need refrigeration so you don’t carry them through the garden.
- If starting in Shiodome, use Exit 10 at Shiodome Station on the Oedo Line, then walk about 5 minutes to the Nakanogomon Gate (中の御門). If coming from Tsukiji, use the Otemon Gate (大手門). Tsukijishijo and Shiodome stations are about 7 minutes from Otemon, and Otemon is about 12 minutes from Shimbashi Station. Save the garden exit and choose your route based on where you plan to have dinner.
- Hamarikyu’s regular hours are 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. General admission for adults is ¥300. As a sample afternoon plan, aim to enter at 15:00 and leave at 16:30, allowing 90 minutes in the garden. Check separately for teahouse wait times, seasonal events, and temporary closures. After 16:30, don’t count on entering; keep only your Shimbashi dinner plan.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
Allow 90 minutes for the garden, 60 minutes for Shiodome and the walk, and time for dinner. Adding an observation deck can shorten your garden visit because of timed reservations, so decide which is the priority first.
Reality check
The closest station depends on which Hamarikyu entrance you use. If you’re ending in Shimbashi, there’s no need to backtrack. If it rains or you’re tired, return directly from Shiodome Station.
Allow 60–120 minutes for the garden, 60 minutes for Shiodome and travel, and 60–90 minutes for dinner. In seasons when last admission is earlier, head to the garden right after lunch.
Main costs include garden admission, tea, and dinner. If adding an observation deck or performance, check timed tickets and cancellation terms separately. Check for cover charges and required drink orders at Shimbashi restaurants.
Watch your step near the garden’s water and on wet paths, and take care on pedestrian deck escalators. In the evening, don’t follow touts; choose a verified venue, use official payment methods, and avoid taking the last train if you’ve had too much to drink.
If plans change
Instead of filling time in Shiodome, switch to a meal in Tsukiji or an indoor plan in Ginza, and keep only your Shimbashi dinner reservation.
Skip the garden and pedestrian decks. Wait inside your current building or take an indoor route connected to the station back to your hotel.
Small tip
Don’t confuse free spaces in high-rise buildings with paid observation decks or restaurants. Check official information for which floors are open to visitors and their hours. Respect security boundaries and photography restrictions in office areas.
Final check before departure
- Check Hamarikyu’s hours, last admission, and entrances.
- Check on-site connections and construction between Shiodome and Shimbashi.
- Save your dinner reservation, smoking rules, cover charge, and return route.
Garden closures, seasonal hours, and passageways through the business district can change. Check same-day notices from the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association and the building and railway operators. Prioritize nighttime safety and restrictions near the water. If the garden is closed, use the indoor option and rest until your dinner reservation.
