At a glance

  • If you’re short on time, you can stop after seeing the Star Ferry pier, Clock Tower, and harbor in front of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. If you’re interested in film, continue east to the Avenue of Stars to see the Bruce Lee statue and handprints of film personalities. If all you want is a harbor photo, you don’t need to make a long round-trip walk. Plan your endpoint around where you’ll have dinner or head back to your hotel.
  • If you’ve come over from Central by ferry, walk east from the west pier to the Clock Tower, the area in front of the museum, and the Avenue of Stars. If you arrive near East Tsim Sha Tsui by MTR, you can reverse the route and start at the Avenue of Stars before walking to the pier. East Tsim Sha Tsui and Tsim Sha Tsui may look close on a map, but check the connecting passages and above-ground walk separately.
  • The Symphony of Lights is generally held daily at 20:00, free of charge. Official viewing points include the area in front of the Cultural Centre and the Avenue of Stars. If you want to hear the music, check the official guide for areas with audio. Instead of missing out on a good harbor view just to wait for the show, enjoy the harbor around sunset and fit in a meal. Sunset times vary by season, so don’t assume sunset is at 20:00.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Around sunset

By Star Ferry: Tsim Sha Tsui Pier → Clock Tower → Hong Kong Museum of Art → Avenue of Stars. By MTR: East Tsim Sha Tsui → Avenue of Stars → Clock Tower → Star Ferry Pier

A short or longer harbor walk

Decide whether to wait for the night view

If you plan to wait for the show, check special notices from the tourism authority first. The show is canceled for the day if a No. 3 or higher tropical cyclone warning, or a Red or Black Rainstorm Warning, is in effect after 15:00. The guidance says the show will not resume even if the warning is lifted before 20:00. If fog makes the buildings hard to see, spend less time waiting and find a nearby place to eat. Don’t stay by the railings for long in strong winds.

Choose an indoor alternative when it rains

The Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Space Museum are close to each other, but they aren’t all-evening shelters. Check opening hours and closing days for your visit date, and whether the exhibition you want to see has an admission fee. If they’re already closed, head to an open indoor space at K11 MUSEA or return to your hotel. The walk is free; the ferry, meals, and exhibitions cost extra. When taking the ferry, distinguish regular cross-harbor service from paid harbor tours, and check return service.

How to fit it in

Take the Star Ferry over from Central and walk, or make this your first evening stroll if you’re staying in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Reality check

Transport

If you arrive from Central on the Star Ferry, walk east from the Tsim Sha Tsui Pier toward the Clock Tower and Avenue of Stars. If you arrive by MTR, walk west from East Tsim Sha Tsui, starting at the Avenue of Stars and heading toward the pier.

Time

Allow 30–45 minutes for a short harbor walk, or 90 minutes to 2 hours if you add the Avenue of Stars, photos, and a break. Show wait times are extra.

Cost

Focus on the free walk and consider whether a cruise or observation deck would offer a similar experience.

Safety

Stay clear of the railings in strong winds or heavy rain, and watch your belongings in nighttime crowds.

If plans change

Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and Avenue of Stars: In dense fog

Spend less time waiting for night views and head to the Hong Kong Museum of Art or K11.

Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and Avenue of Stars: In strong winds or heavy rain

Skip the waterfront and take an indoor route between connected spaces.

Small tip

Along with skyline photos, take a look at the exhibits and handprints related to Hong Kong cinema.

Final check before departure

  • Save MTR exits and the ferry pier
  • Check sunset, weather, and ferry service
  • Save an indoor alternative

Check for beach closures, events, Star Ferry service, and weather warnings on the day.
