At a glance
- Check when to arrive at the downtown ferry terminal and how boarding works before booking your first activity.
- If you’re traveling without a car, check bus routes and walking distances. Compare your plans with a tour if you want to visit several wineries.
- If you plan to taste wine, don’t drive. Make time for lunch and water breaks.
- Keep an Auckland waterfront walk as a backup for windy days or service disruptions.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Arrive early at the downtown terminal, check service alerts and your return ferry, then board the ferry to Matiatia.
Choose an Oneroa walk and either a beach or one tasting, and leave plenty of time for lunch. Check the island bus’s next departure first.
Take a bus back to Matiatia one departure earlier than the bus you would need to catch your booked ferry, then wait for your return sailing.
How to fit it in
Take a morning ferry, spend 6–8 hours on the island, and aim to return to the terminal using transport one departure earlier than the one you would need to catch your booked return ferry.
Reality check
The basic car-free option is a Fullers360 direct ferry from the downtown terminal at 99 Quay Street to Mātiatia, about 40 minutes. Confirm the actual wharf, any stops, and the difference between boarding guarantees for Walk-up and Reserve tickets on the operator’s booking page. On the island, use AT’s official journey planner for Mātiatia Ferry Terminal to Oneroa, and save the routes and stops listed for that day, such as 50A and 50B. Don’t bring a rental car on a day when you plan to taste wine.
Set aside 9–11 hours for the whole day, including both ferry journeys and waiting at the terminals, and limit your island itinerary to 2–3 stops.
Add up the return ferry, round-trip island bus, meal, and one tasting separately. On AT regular buses, tap on and off with a HOP card or a supported contactless card or device. Fullers360 Waiheke ferries are excluded from AT contactless payment, so don’t assume the bank card you use on the bus will automatically work for the ferry. Check separate ticket and HOP conditions. Don’t compare reserved-seat tickets with tickets that require you to queue as if they were the same product.
Don’t drive after drinking. Check for strong winds and wet paths on coastal walks, and avoid rushing to catch the last ferry.
If plans change
Skip island travel and connect the Auckland Art Gallery, the waterfront, and Wynyard Quarter on foot.
Spend more time walking in Oneroa and at the beach, then take an island bus to just one more village.
Small tip
Confirm the ferry, island transport, and return buffer in that order. This reduces the risk of missing a connection when restaurant and tasting reservations fill the day.
Final check before departure
- Check your outbound and return ferries and same-day service alerts.
- Check payment options for island buses and your last connection.
- If you have a tasting reservation, arrange for someone else to drive.
- Save the actual bus from Oneroa back to Mātiatia, along with your ferry ticket’s boarding cutoff and waiting conditions.
Timetables, terminals, and booking availability vary by season and service conditions. Check the operator’s service alerts and your return ferry again on the day of travel.
