At a glance
- From Central Station Exit D1, follow Queen’s Road Central toward Queen Victoria Street. Go via 100QRC and take the Mid-Levels Escalator up to Hollywood Road, then enter Tai Kwun. Include the walk from the station to Tai Kwun in your sightseeing time.
- At Tai Kwun, first explore the courtyard surrounded by the former police station, court, and prison buildings, then choose one exhibition. The site itself is free to visit from 08:00 to 23:00, but JC Contemporary exhibitions are usually open Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 19:00. Don’t assume the exhibitions are open just because the courtyard is open in the morning.
- Leave Tai Kwun and walk west along Hollywood Road to Man Mo Temple. Adding PMQ means a detour and more time for the visit. If you’re interested in the temple and nearby lanes, skip PMQ. If you’re more interested in design shops and exhibitions, spend less time at Tai Kwun.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Central Station Exit D1 → uphill escalator → Tai Kwun (60–90 minutes) → Hollywood Road → Man Mo Temple → meal and rest → Sheung Wan Station
How to reduce uphill walking
The Mid-Levels Escalator runs downhill from 06:00 to 10:00 and uphill from 10:00 until midnight. Direction changes may take place section by section just after 10 a.m., so follow the signs on site. If you set out early in the morning, don’t count on taking the escalator uphill: take a taxi close to Tai Kwun or walk up the hill. If you plan to take the escalator downhill on your way back in the afternoon, you’ll find yourself dealing with stairs again.
After Man Mo Temple, take a short look at the nearby lanes, then head downhill toward Sheung Wan Station. There’s no need to go out of your way to use the long staircase on Ladder Street. The walk from the temple to the station still has slopes and crosswalks, so choose a road route on the map that avoids stairs. Add Western Market only if you have energy left; the half-day walk is complete even if you finish at the station.
If you have knee pain or are traveling with a stroller or wheelchair, don’t use this lane walk as a step-free itinerary. Set the taxi destination to Tai Kwun’s accessible entrance at Pottinger Gate on Hollywood Road or Bauhinia House Gate on Arbuthnot Road. Not every preserved building on the site is equally accessible, so ask staff for guidance.
How to fit it in
If you want to see an exhibition, an 11 a.m. start is convenient. Allow 60–90 minutes for Tai Kwun, 45–60 minutes for Hollywood Road and Man Mo Temple, and a total of 3–4 hours including a meal, rest, and the walk to Sheung Wan Station. These are planning estimates; adjust them to your walking pace.
Reality check
After 10 a.m.: Central Station Exit D1 → 100QRC and the escalator → Tai Kwun → west along Hollywood Road → Man Mo Temple → Sheung Wan Station. You can’t take the same escalator downhill in the afternoon.
Allow 3–4 hours for the lanes, temple, and an indoor break.
The escalator, lane walk, and general visit to Tai Kwun are free. Add the cost of paid exhibitions, meals, cafés, and a taxi to the starting point if you choose to take one.
The route still includes slopes and stairs. Skip detours through the lanes if stone steps are wet or you have pain. During a Black Rainstorm Warning or typhoon warning, follow venue opening information and travel restrictions first.
If plans change
Skip Tai Kwun on the hill and the downhill walk through Sheung Wan; stick to a short, flat route around Central Market. The Mid-Levels Escalator runs downhill only from 6–10 a.m. and uphill after that, so don’t plan to use it to descend.
Take a taxi to an entrance that provides access to Tai Kwun, then visit the site and have a meal there. Skip Man Mo Temple and the Sheung Wan lanes, and take a taxi back as well.
Visit an exhibition that’s open or a café inside Tai Kwun, and put the lane walk on hold. The walk to PMQ is outdoors too, so don’t assume it’s a good alternative in heavy rain.
Small tip
Even at Central Station, where you exit changes where you begin the uphill walk. Save the exit letter along with the first landmark.
Final check before departure
- Check that your start time is after 10 a.m. and save the uphill escalator section.
- Check Tai Kwun exhibition closures and admission fees, then choose one exhibition or the free courtyard.
- Save a road route from Man Mo Temple to Sheung Wan Station that reduces stairs, along with a taxi alternative.
The escalator’s direction and hours differ from Tai Kwun’s general opening hours and exhibition hours. Follow each venue’s notices for same-day construction, exhibition closures, and severe weather.
