At a glance

  • Divide the 13 nights as follows: 3 in Prague, 3 in Vienna, 3 in Budapest, and 4 in Kraków. Travel between all four cities during the day; the itinerary doesn’t depend on sleeper cars or overnight trains.
  • Check daytime trains and connections for your actual travel dates on cross-border routes. Don’t book timed-entry visits for the afternoon of a travel day.
  • If a daytime train is canceled, arrange a safe place to stay in your current city and check the carrier’s refund and rebooking options. If your departure from Kraków is confirmed, don’t skip Kraków; recalculate using an alternative connection that can get you there and your remaining time in the city.

How to fit it in

This itinerary suits travelers who want to spend at least three nights in each city and visit castles and palaces as well as 20th-century historical sites.

Reality check

Transport

Main stations and approximate journey times: Praha hl.n. → Wien Hbf, about 4 hours; Wien Hbf → Budapest-Keleti, about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours; Budapest-Nyugati → Kraków Gł., about 8 hours in the 2025–26 MÁV daytime timetable example. Transfers and arrival stations on the final leg can vary by day and construction work. Compare the same date and train number on the departure and destination railways’ websites, and keep the afternoon free.

Time

Keep the afternoons free on the three travel days between cities. Plan your day-14 departure separately. If you have less than two weeks, leave Kraków for another trip because the journey there is long.

Cost

Refund terms vary by ticket on cross-border trains. Don’t choose based on price alone; compare change options and seat reservation fees too.

Safety

Even on a daytime train, delays may mean you arrive after dark. Save a short, well-lit route from each station to your accommodation in advance.

If plans change

What to do if a daytime cross-border train in Eastern Europe is canceled

If a cross-border train is canceled, first check whether you can stay in your current city and rebook with the carrier. If your departure from Kraków is confirmed, don’t skip the final city; compare trains, buses, and flights that can get you there. If no connection works, discuss changing your departure flight with the airline.

What to do if a rail strike overlaps with your departure date

After checking the strike notice, look first for a train confirmed to be running or an alternative bus or flight. Ask the carrier about refund and change terms for your original ticket. Don’t buy a new ticket based only on whether your ticket for a train that isn’t running may be refundable.

Small tip

If flights from Kraków are inconvenient, extend the trip to 15 days, add one night in Warsaw, and fly home from there. If you’re keeping the trip to 14 days, move one of your four Kraków nights to Warsaw and confirm your new departure flight and train connections first.

Final check before departure

  • Check entry reservations for the attractions you plan to visit during your three-night stays in Prague and Vienna, and train options to the next city.
  • Save the reservations and travel times you’ll need for your three nights in Budapest.
  • Check your four-night stay in Kraków and travel time to the airport on departure day.

This route doesn’t depend on overnight trains, but that doesn’t mean every leg has a direct daytime train. Enter your travel dates and compare results from ČD, ÖBB, MÁV, and Polish railways, then leave the afternoon free on travel days.
