At a glance
- Don’t schedule timed-entry attractions on the day you cross the border.
- Separate your arrival day in Vienna from your full sightseeing days. Book Schönbrunn Palace, Upper Belvedere, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum on different days. Use the remaining day for Naschmarkt and a café break. Day trips aren’t part of the basic plan.
- Starting the day after you arrive in Prague, spend one day at the castle and in Malá Strana, and another in the Old Town and Josefov. Add a day trip such as Kutná Hora only if you give up one of these two days or add another night in Prague.
- If a train cancellation adds a day in Vienna and your departure date is fixed, cut Prague sightseeing to one day. Choose either the castle or the Old Town and Josefov. To keep both sightseeing days, check whether you can change your hotel, train, and departure flight, and what it would cost to extend the whole trip by a day.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
After checking in, have a meal and take a short walk around Stephansplatz. Don’t schedule a reserved attraction visit or performance if you arrive late.
Take the U4 to Schönbrunn station and enter at your reserved palace time. Allow half a day for the interior and gardens, then return to your city hotel in the afternoon to rest.
Choose an Upper Belvedere entry time on the official ticket page and go to the entrance at Prinz-Eugen-Straße 27. Allow 2–3 hours for a morning visit, then choose either the gardens or a café after lunch. Don’t assume that the Lower Belvedere or Belvedere 21 uses the same ticket or entrance as Upper Belvedere.
Make the Kunsthistorisches Museum at Maria-Theresien-Platz your main morning visit. Check that it’s open on your visit date, allow about 3 hours, then spend the afternoon at the nearby square and a café. If the museum is closed, swap this day with your city break on Day 5.
Take a short walk from Karlsplatz toward Naschmarkt, and leave time for the market, a café, and packing. If the market isn’t open, take a walk around the Old Town instead. Add a performance on this day or the evening after an earlier sightseeing day only if official seats are available. Save a WienMobil route back to your hotel based on the performance’s end time.
Check trains and seat conditions for Wien Hbf to Praha hl.n. on your travel date with ÖBB and České dráhy. If your ticket lists different departure or arrival stations, follow the station names on the ticket. Keep arrival day to check-in and a meal nearby.
Check which parts of Prague Castle are open on your visit date. Visit the castle in the morning, then walk down to Malá Strana. Don’t add another major paid attraction in the afternoon.
Visit Josefov first, then walk on to Old Town Square and Charles Bridge. The Jewish Museum is closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays. If needed, swap Days 7 and 8; if the museum is closed, skip the indoor visit and explore the Old Town.
First arrange luggage pickup and your transfer to the station or airport, then take only a short walk near your hotel. Don’t add a round-trip day trip.
Places and meals
Allow separate time for indoor visits and the extensive gardens.
Google MapsRegular market days and flea market days differ.
Google MapsContinue walking to Charles Bridge.
Google MapsHow to fit it in
A good fit for travelers who care more about museums, performances, and café time than visiting many countries.
Reality check
Check the date-specific timetable for direct Vienna–Prague trains with Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), then decide whether to reserve a seat.
This is an example of a 9-day trip with 8 nights. Spend five nights in Vienna on Days 1–5. Take the train on Day 6 and spend your first night in Prague, then stay a second and third night on Days 7 and 8 before departing on Day 9. Your two full sightseeing days in Prague are Days 7 and 8, so the basic plan covers the castle and Malá Strana, then the Old Town and Josefov. To add a day trip, swap it for one of these days or add another night in Prague.
List the places you’ll actually visit, then compare the cost of a palace or museum pass with individual tickets.
During the day, check public transport and walking routes back to your hotel after an evening performance.
If plans change
First check for an official replacement service on the same day. If you postpone your trip until the next day, check the change terms for your Vienna and Prague hotels. If your departure date is fixed, drop either the castle day or the Old Town day in Prague. To keep both sightseeing days, check whether you can extend the whole trip and your Prague stay by a day. The basic plan has no day trip to cut if your train is canceled.
If the performance is sold out, visit a music exhibition instead.
Small tip
For performances in Vienna, check the venue’s official schedule and seating chart before considering street sellers.
Final check before departure
- Book timed-entry attractions in Vienna, such as Schönbrunn and Belvedere, on different days through their official ticket sellers.
- Check direct and connecting trains for your travel date with ÖBB and České dráhy, and save the seat conditions.
- For a performance day, check the last transport back to your hotel based on the end time.
- Schedule Prague Castle and Old Town visits starting the day after you arrive.
Don’t schedule timed-entry attractions on your Vienna–Prague travel day. Check train times and seat conditions for your actual travel date with ÖBB and České dráhy. If the cross-border service changes, swap the travel day with a free day in Vienna or Prague.
