At a glance

  • Stay in Vienna for Days 1–4, then travel to Salzburg on Day 5. Travel to Prague on Day 8, stay through the night of Day 11, and depart on Day 12.
  • Allow for train delays on intercity travel days; don't schedule a performance or timed-entry visit on those days.
  • For your day trip from Salzburg, choose either Lake Wolfgangsee or Hallstatt. Stay in the city if the weather is poor.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Days 1–4 · 4 nights in Vienna

Schedule Schönbrunn Palace and museums on separate days. On the day before crossing the border, leave only a café visit and a walk along the Ringstrasse.

Days 5–7 · 3 nights in Salzburg

On Day 5, travel from Wien Hauptbahnhof (Wien Hbf) to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (Salzburg Hbf) and leave your bags at your accommodation. On Day 6, see the Old Town and fortress; on Day 7, visit just one lake. For Lake Wolfgang, check round-trip service to St. Gilgen on buses 150 and 150X from the main station. For Hallstatt, take bus 150 to Bad Ischl, then the train to Hallstatt Bahnhof. From the boat landing in front of the station, cross the lake by boat to the village landing, Hallstatt Markt. Return in reverse: boat → train from Hallstatt Bahnhof → bus 150 from Bad Ischl. Check both the ÖBB journey planner and the round-trip timetable for the Hallstatt lake crossing on your visit date, and leave the whole day open, including transfers and waiting time.

Days 8–12 · 4 nights in Prague

On Day 8, travel from Salzburg Hbf to Praha hl.n., checking the actual search results for transfers and arrival times. On Days 9–11, spread your walks between the Castle District, Old Town, and Vyšehrad. Do not plan a long day trip for the day before departure.

How to fit it in

A good fit for a first trip to Central Europe when you want time in three cities and one smaller town.

Reality check

Transport

ÖBB runs direct trains from Wien Hbf to Salzburg Hbf. The fastest take about 2 hours 30 minutes, but timings vary depending on construction work and train type. For Salzburg Hbf to Praha hl.n., check the transfer station, layover, and total travel time in the search results for your travel date, and leave the travel day free. Check each route by entering the station names on ÖBB and České dráhy, and avoid options with an excessively short transfer.

Time

The plan covers 12 days and 11 nights, from the day you arrive locally through your departure day. It includes 4 nights in Vienna, 3 in Salzburg, and 4 in Prague. Add the days needed for round-trip flights from Korea separately, depending on your flights.

Cost

Once your dates are set, compare individual bookings for performances, palaces, and long-distance trains with travel passes.

Safety

Don't plan a long day trip the day before departure, and keep your bags close in crowded stations.

If plans change

Backup plan if trains from Vienna to Salzburg or Salzburg to Prague are disrupted

First check official replacement services for the same day. Before changing accommodation, review cancellation and change terms, and drop either the lake visit or one of your in-depth Prague plans.

Backup plan for poor mountain weather at the lake

If mountain weather is poor, switch to a cultural day in Salzburg.

Small tip

Stopping in Český Krumlov with your luggage makes transfers harder. Compare an overnight stay with a day tour first.

Final check before departure

  • For palaces and museums in Vienna, book one timed-entry visit per day through official sellers.
  • Check actual schedules and seat conditions for Vienna–Salzburg and Salzburg–Prague with ÖBB and České dráhy.
  • Check operating dates for boats and mountain transport, including the last return service, then choose just one lake area.
  • On the day before departure from Prague, keep to the city rather than taking a long day trip.

Don't schedule timed-entry visits on the Vienna–Salzburg or Salzburg–Prague travel days. Check schedules, construction, and seat conditions for your travel dates with ÖBB and České dráhy. Visit just one lake area on a day with suitable weather.
