At a glance
- In Vienna, set aside one day for a palace and another for a museum to reduce travel. Choose KHM for the Habsburg painting collection, or the Leopold Museum for Egon Schiele and Viennese modern art. The Leopold holds the world's largest Schiele collection, though the works on display may change with your visit date.
- Hotel Ambassador in central Vienna opened in 1898. If you want to stay near Kärntner Straße, consider it alongside other hotels and compare location, room rates, and cancellation terms. Its long history does not automatically make it a match for your budget.
- Shopping at Parndorf outlet means giving up at least half a day of sightseeing in Vienna. Do not assume you can get there from Vienna in 30 minutes. The roughly 40 minutes in the official guidance refers to driving from Vienna. For the shuttle, check its separate timetable and pickup point, then add time to reach the stop, wait in both directions, and shop. Shorten the Day 3 museum visit to fit it in, and avoid combining it with Schönbrunn on the same day.
- The Salzburg Card is valid for 24, 48, or 72 consecutive hours from first use. It offers one free admission to each covered attraction, included public transportation, performance discounts, and other benefits. It does not cover every train. Regular S-Bahn services are excluded; Lokalbahn S1 is included as far as Acharting. Check the official transportation list for other included routes. If you arrive late on Day 4, you can wait until the morning of Day 5 to activate it and first walk around the old town without the card.
- In Graz, walk through the UNESCO-listed old town and look down over its red roofs from Schlossberg. Across the Mur River, Kunsthaus Graz is an option for contemporary art exhibitions. On a travel day, it may be hard to arrive before last admission, so prioritize a walk and dinner, and visit an exhibition if time allows.
From Vienna to Salzburg in the West, Then Southeast to Graz
Visit in this order: ① Vienna, 3 nights → ② Salzburg, 2 nights → ③ Graz, 1 night. If your flight from Vienna is early, skip ③ and return to Vienna on Day 6.
See the travel guidance for each stop below.
-
Vienna ① Days 1–3 · 3 Nights
In this northeastern city, visit palaces and museums on separate days. For an early flight from Vienna, return here on Day 6 and stay one more night.
-
Salzburg ② Days 4–5 · 2 Nights
Travel west from Vienna to explore the old town and fortress. On Day 5, choose either sightseeing in the city or a round trip to Hallstatt.
-
Graz ③ Day 6 · 1 Night
Travel southeast from Salzburg. After arrival, explore the old town and regional food, then plan the next day around your departure or journey to Vienna Airport.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
This itinerary includes 6 nights in total: three in Vienna, two in Salzburg, and one in Graz. Prioritize travel between cities on Days 4 and 6, and use Day 7 for departure. Fit sightseeing in Graz into the time between your train's arrival on Day 6 and your departure on Day 7.
Leave your luggage at your hotel and walk around St. Stephen's Cathedral and Kärntner Straße. Take a café break with a melange and dessert, then choose schnitzel or Tafelspitz for dinner. If you arrive late, simply shorten the walk. Hotel Ambassador is an accommodation option in the center; you do not need to schedule it as a separate attraction.
Visit Schönbrunn Palace at your reserved entry time, then walk through the gardens. Allow plenty of time for the interiors and gardens. In the afternoon, head back toward your hotel and add a café stop or a walk along the Ringstrasse. Palace tickets cover different areas, so first choose one that includes the rooms and garden facilities you want to see.
Focus on either the Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM) or the Leopold Museum, depending on your interests. After viewing the paintings, take a break in the MuseumsQuartier or old town. If you have booked a performance, plan your evening around its start time. If shopping is the priority, spend at least half a day on a round trip to Parndorf instead of a museum. Avoid fitting two museums, shopping, and a performance into one day.
Take a morning train to Salzburg, leave your luggage, then walk through Mirabell Gardens and the old town. Mirabell Gardens was a filming location for The Sound of Music, so you may want to stop there first if you are interested in the movie's scenery. If you arrive early enough to comfortably make last admission, visit Hohensalzburg Fortress; otherwise, move it to Day 5. Choose the Salzburg Card duration based on your actual entry times today and tomorrow.
Visit Mozart's birthplace or one museum, plus the fortress if you missed it the day before, and eat in the old town. If using the card, plan around the one-admission rule for each attraction. If lake scenery matters more to you, replace this day with Hallstatt. First check round-trip train and ferry or bus connections, then return to the same hotel in Salzburg.
Choose a morning departure for Graz. Travel from the central station to your hotel, leave your luggage, and walk through the old town and up Schlossberg. Add Kunsthaus Graz only if your arrival time and its opening days allow. For dinner, choose Styrian regional dishes. If travel leaves almost no time for sightseeing, skip Graz and return to Vienna for your final night.
For a flight from Graz Airport, set aside time for airport transportation and check-in before planning your morning. For a flight from Vienna, travel from Graz to Vienna Airport that day only if the full journey and a buffer for delays fit your schedule. This route does not suit an early flight from Vienna. If you change Day 6 to a return to Vienna and a night there, travel from your Vienna hotel to the airport today.

- In Vienna, consider schnitzel or Tafelspitz for dinner, and Sachertorte with a melange for a break between walks.
- In Salzburg, compare meals at old-town cafés and beer halls. If you have booked a performance, move dinner earlier.
- In Graz, look for salads with pumpkin seed oil or Styrian regional dishes on the menu. If you enjoy wine, choose Styrian wines to accompany your meal. Match market and restaurant opening days to your travel day.

Graz Google MapsHow to fit it in
This trip suits travelers who want palaces, paintings, and classical music, followed by a change of pace with contemporary art and regional food. In Vienna, choose accommodation with good subway access. In Salzburg and Graz, consider transportation between the central station and old town. Decide on your departure airport and final overnight stop before booking all three cities.
Reality check
Vienna Central Station (Wien Hbf) → Salzburg Central Station (Salzburg Hbf) takes about 2 hours 25 minutes on a fast RJX service. Add time to get from your hotel to the station and from the arrival station to your next hotel. For Salzburg → Graz, compare direct and connecting trains on ÖBB for your travel date. Allow at least half a day, including the train ride, collecting your luggage, and reaching your next hotel. Graz → Vienna takes about 2 hours 30 minutes–3 hours by train, but reaching Vienna Airport takes additional time. For Graz → Vienna Airport, distinguish arrival at Wien Hbf from arrival at the airport when searching, and allow time for transfers and your airline's check-in deadline.
Allow 3 days for Vienna, including your arrival day; 2 days for Salzburg, including the travel day; and 1 day for Graz, including the travel day. Day 7 is your departure day. If you arrive in Graz late and leave early the next morning, you will not have a full day to explore. In that case, skip Graz and use the return-to-Vienna option.
First add up accommodation for 3 nights in Vienna, 2 in Salzburg, and 1 in Graz, plus intercity trains, airport transportation, and meals. Then add only the sights and performances you choose: Schönbrunn, KHM or the Leopold Museum, the fortress, a Graz art museum, and a performance. Compare the Salzburg Card price with the total individual admission fees and included transportation costs for places you will actually visit. For the return-to-Vienna option, replace the night in Graz with a night in Vienna and the Salzburg → Vienna train fare.
Keep your bag in front of you at crowded stations, tram platforms, and ticket lines. Shorten walks on Schlossberg and around the fortress before rain or darkness arrives, and avoid pushing yourself up steep paths while carrying luggage.
If plans change
Change the route to 3 nights in Vienna → 2 nights in Salzburg → 1 night in Vienna, and skip Graz. Return to Vienna on Day 6 and travel to the airport on Day 7, making it easier to catch an early flight from Vienna.
Spend three nights in Vienna, with separate days for arrival and the old town, Schönbrunn, and a museum, then depart on Day 4. If the museum is closed, swap Days 2 and 3 and adjust your palace reservation too.
Coordinate the round trip by train from Salzburg Hbf → Attnang-Puchheim → Hallstatt Bahnhof with the ferry to Hallstatt Markt. The station and village are on opposite sides of the lake. Do not assume the rail ticket includes the ferry or luggage storage. Compare round-trip bus connections for your travel date too. If the connections do not work, stay in Salzburg.
Plan 3 nights in Vienna → 1 night in Salzburg → 1 night in Innsbruck → 1 night in Vienna. Travel to Salzburg on Day 4, Innsbruck on Day 5, and back to Vienna on Day 6. Add mountain attractions only if your arrival time fits their opening hours and maintenance schedule. If they are closed, keep the same accommodation and explore the city.
Keep your current accommodation booking and scale the day back to one city museum with confirmed opening hours or a café. Skip the fortress or Schlossberg viewpoints if the weather calls for it. Before detouring to another city, calculate ticket and hotel change costs and check your departure connections.
Small tip
If you choose an opera performance, keep the Day 3 museum visit shorter and plan dinner, clothing, and transportation back to your hotel. Check the restaurant location and menu prices before booking. On travel days, it is better to avoid dinner reservations that are hard to cancel.
Final check before departure
- Choose your departure airport and flight time, then book 3 nights in Vienna, 2 in Salzburg, and 1 in Graz, or a final night in Vienna instead.
- Search ÖBB for the intercity trains and airport connections needed on Days 4, 6, and 7. Allow time for transfers, rail work, and check-in deadlines.
- First coordinate your Schönbrunn entry time and the opening days of your chosen museum, then book performances and restaurants. Compare Salzburg Card coverage and validity periods, and book the Parndorf shuttle separately.
Before adding a night in Graz, check your Day 7 flight and transportation to the airport. If you have an early flight from Vienna, return to Vienna on Day 6, stay there overnight, and skip Graz. Rail work, transfers, palace entry times, and museum closing days may vary on your travel dates.
