At a glance
- Set aside half a day for Schönbrunn Palace and its extensive gardens.
- If you’re visiting the Belvedere for Klimt, check time-slot tickets for the Upper Belvedere first.
- Choose one museum that fits your interests: the Albertina, Kunsthistorisches Museum, or Leopold Museum.
- Choose where to eat based on the menu and your day’s route rather than a specific restaurant name to avoid long waits.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
U4 to Schönbrunn station → reserved palace interior visit → garden walk → return to the city center on the U4; if the gardens are your main focus, skip the interior ticket
Walk around the Hofburg and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, then take a break at one Café Central after checking its official opening hours. Save the Prater for another day, even if you have energy left.
If you’re going for Klimt, choose a timed-entry ticket for the Upper Belvedere. If you’re going for the painting collection, choose a ticket for the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Then visit either Karlskirche or one performance venue → accommodation
Places and meals
Plan separate time for the gardens and indoor visits.

Google MapsA café to consider; check its opening hours for your visit date on the operator’s website.
Google MapsHow to fit it in
For a stay of three nights or more, set aside half a day for Schönbrunn, half a day for the old town, and 2–3 hours for one museum. If you’re not interested in exhibitions, swap the third paid museum day for a walk around the Prater or a café.
Reality check
Use Schönbrunn station on the U4 as your reference point for Schönbrunn, and Stephansplatz station for the old town. The Upper Belvedere and Kunsthistorisches Museum are in different locations, so don’t book both for the same day. Save the official directions for the place you choose.
Allow at least half a day for a palace, 2–3 hours for an art museum, and half a day for the Old Town.
List the paid attractions you’ll actually visit before comparing the cost of a combined pass with individual tickets.
Keep your bag zipped in tourist areas and on public transit. Check the route back to your accommodation during the day if you’re going to a performance.
If plans change
Don’t buy unofficial palace tickets. Visit the publicly accessible garden areas and one museum in the MuseumsQuartier instead.
Skip the line and head to a nearby café with its menu and prices posted, so you don’t lose time for a meal.
Small tip
Instead of treating three palaces as a checklist, choose just one that requires a reservation and leave the rest of your time for the Old Town and cafés.
Final check before departure
- Check the official Schönbrunn website for time slots and entry requirements on your visit date, then book one palace visit.
- Check the official opening and ticket information for either the Belvedere or Kunsthistorisches Museum.
- Check the official Café Central website for opening hours on your visit date, and decide in advance when a long wait means you’ll skip it.
- Check which zones are covered by airport transit fares and city transit passes.
For Schönbrunn, choose a timed-entry visit first. In the suggested three-day itinerary, visit Schönbrunn on day one, the old town on day two, and either the Belvedere or the Kunsthistorisches Museum on day three. If the official page’s opening hours or ticket conditions don’t work for your visit date, switch to the public garden areas and one location in the MuseumsQuartier.
