At a glance

  • Plan a day in Český Krumlov around the castle and the bends of the Vltava River. If your arrival and departure leave little time, make the castle’s interior a lower priority.
  • Karlovy Vary is easy to explore along its spa colonnades. You can plan a walk and viewpoint visit without booking a spa treatment.
  • Visiting both towns in one day means a lot of travel and too little time in either place. Plan one night in Český Krumlov as the default. For Karlovy Vary, keep your Prague accommodation and make a round trip in one day. An extra overnight stay isn’t essential if you choose only Karlovy Vary.
  • Restaurant and venue hours can vary by season and day of the week, so check official tourism information or venue websites before departure.
  • The shortest one-way trip listed on FlixBus’s official route page from Prague to Karlovy Vary is about 1 hour 50 minutes. Your chosen departure may take longer depending on stops and the route. Your ticket will show whether you arrive at Terminal (Západní 2080/2A) or Tržnice (Varšavská). Allow extra time to walk to the Mill Colonnade or take local transit.
  • FlixBus’s shortest official one-way trip from Prague to Český Krumlov takes about 2 hours 35 minutes. Check whether your selected service arrives at the bus terminal or Špičák. Official visitor information says it is about a 10-minute walk from the bus terminal to the central square; the castle is farther. Set your castle interior reservation time after allowing for the bus ride, walking, and possible delays. Compare the budget by adding round-trip bus fare, your chosen admission ticket, meals, and one night in Český Krumlov. If you arrive late, skip the paid interior tour and walk around the old town.

How to fit it in

If you have a day or two after three days in Prague, prioritize Český Krumlov. Choose Karlovy Vary for a spa-town atmosphere.

Reality check

Transport

For buses, first choose your departure and arrival stops in the round-trip search for your travel date on FlixBus or RegioJet. Prague search results may include different stops, such as Florenc and Na Knížecí, so save the exact address shown on your ticket. Check for notices about construction-related changes to the Main Railway Station stop; don’t rely only on its old Wilsonova location. These routes are not a connection between the two towns on the same day.

Time

An overnight stay in Český Krumlov lets you see the lanes after the daytime crowds leave. A day trip is enough for a walk around Karlovy Vary’s spa area.

Cost

Add up Prague round-trip transport, castle and tower admission, meals, and accommodation separately for each town. Don’t assume either town is cheap; compare the total shown during booking for your travel date.

Safety

Wet stone paths by the river and around the spa colonnades can be slippery. If you try the mineral water, check its temperature first.

If plans change

If a long-distance bus is delayed

Don’t link the two cities on the same day. If you have already booked an overnight stay in one of them, stay there. For a day trip, shorten the observation tower or castle interior visit to fit your confirmed return service to Prague.

If the castle interior is closed

Don’t look for unofficial entrances. Stick to the old town and riverside walking route.

Small tip

A day trip to Český Krumlov is possible, but the round trip takes a long time. Decide first whether to stay overnight.

Final check before departure

  • Choose only one town: Český Krumlov or Karlovy Vary.
  • Save your round-trip transport details and the time of your last return to Prague.
  • Check the opening days for Český Krumlov Castle and its museums. If you choose Karlovy Vary, check the operating hours for Diana Observation Tower and the funicular separately, then book a return bus to Prague working back from the last downhill funicular service.

Check each venue’s official website for opening days at Český Krumlov Castle and the Karlovy Vary colonnades and viewpoints. Match your round-trip travel from Prague to the actual timetable for your travel date.
