At a glance

  • Group Nyhavn, the royal palaces, and Rosenborg Gardens together within walking distance on your first day. If you want to visit a design museum, choose the paid 90-minute to 2-hour visit to Designmuseum Danmark near Amalienborg; don’t also book an interior tour at Rosenborg.
  • Torvehallerne is a market near Nørreport Station. Head to Nørrebro after lunch on Day 2, and set aside time to relax somewhere rather than spending it waiting at a café.
  • Louisiana is an optional day trip that takes 5–6 hours including round-trip transport and a visit. This plan assumes three full days in the city. If you’re leaving by plane or long-distance train that day, skip the day trip and choose just one of the harbor or Tivoli.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1 · Harbor and Royal Palaces

Walk from Nyhavn in the morning to the outside of Amalienborg, Rosenborg Gardens, and the design shops in Indre By to get a feel for the harbor and royal district in one outing.

Day 2 · Market and Neighborhoods

If you choose Schønnemann, plan lunch there to fit its official opening and reservation hours, and have only a snack at Torvehallerne. On a day when you have lunch at the market, continue through the streets and parks of Nørrebro, then choose one other restaurant or bakery that is open for dinner.

Day 3 · Choose One and Tivoli

Choose either a round trip to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art or a stroll along Copenhagen’s harbor. After returning to the city, make Tivoli your last stop of the evening.

History and context

Kingdom of the Sound

Copenhagen was the capital of a maritime power between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

Modern Design

Danish design shows up not only in furniture and lighting, but also in the city’s public spaces.

How to fit it in

Copenhagen works well as a first or last stop on a trip to Northern Europe, and it’s easy to reach the airport.

Reality check

Transport

For Louisiana, look up trains to Humlebæk from København H or Nørreport. The train takes about 35–45 minutes, followed by an official walking route of 10–15 minutes from the station to the museum. If the walk is difficult, check the 388 bus stop at Humlebæk Strandvej/Louisiana, but don’t assume it will be faster than walking because of wait times. Allow 2 hours for the round trip, including station access and waiting.

Time

Allow 4–6 hours on Day 1 for the harbor and palace walk plus a design visit, and 4 hours on Day 2 for the market and Nørrebro. The day trip takes at least half a day: 2 hours round-trip travel, 3 hours for the exhibitions and gardens, plus time for a meal. Add Tivoli after Louisiana only if the return timing works, it’s open that day, and you still have the energy. Don’t plan both on your departure day.

Cost

As of 2026-10-04, Louisiana's official sales page lists adult admission at 145 DKK. Tivoli starts at 180 DKK for admission only and 469 DKK for admission plus rides, so the costs differ for an evening walk and a rides experience. These are starting prices; compare the total checkout price for your actual date and entry time. Add round-trip suburban rail, meals, and Designmuseum admission separately.

Safety

Even when a bike lane looks like a pedestrian path, it’s a fast-moving lane. Check for cyclists before crossing.

If plans change

An alternative if you cannot get a restaurant reservation

Instead of chasing another popular restaurant’s queue, get a meal at a Torvehallerne stall or a bakery along your route.

Alternative if strong winds hit the harbor

Skip bikes and canal travel and choose one indoor place that’s open, such as Designmuseum Danmark or the National Gallery of Denmark.

Small tip

Bike lanes are central to everyday transportation. Be careful not to block cyclists while walking.

Final check before departure

  • If you choose Louisiana, save the round-trip train to Humlebæk and the museum’s opening and last-entry times for the same date.
  • For Tivoli, check whether it’s open on your visit date and distinguish admission-only tickets from tickets that include rides.
  • If you’re leaving on Day 3, plan when to pick up your luggage and arrive at the airport first, and skip the day trip.

Rosenborg Castle admission tickets are for timed entry slots in 10-minute increments. You can also buy tickets on site if spaces remain, but they may sell out during peak season, so booking ahead is safer. You do not need a castle admission ticket to walk outside in the King's Garden. Check Tivoli's official calendar for opening dates and prices.
