At a glance
- Choose one city. In Roskilde, see the cathedral and Viking Ship Museum; in Helsingør, explore Kronborg and the old town in one area.
- According to the Viking Ship Museum’s 2026 visitor information, it is open 10:00–17:00 from May 1 to October 18 and 10:00–16:00 from October 19 to April 30. The cathedral may have services or events, so check its calendar for your visit date.
- If trains to the day-trip destination are disrupted before you leave, stay in Copenhagen. Don’t try to fill the day by switching to another day-trip destination.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Take a day-trip train to Roskilde Station and visit the cathedral → lunch → Viking Ship Museum. If the opening hours don’t work, choose just one site and return to the station.
Arrive at Helsingør Station in time for your booked visit during Kronborg’s opening hours → walk to the harbor → tour the castle interior → have lunch in the old town → return to the same station.
Consider TorvehallerneKBH for dinner only after checking its hours and the last order time at individual stalls for your visit date. If it’s closed, choose a restaurant near your accommodation instead of adding another day trip.
History and context
Roskilde is a good place to learn about Denmark’s early monarchy and maritime culture.
Kronborg Castle can be understood as a symbol of Nordic maritime traffic and royal power.
Places and meals
A key site in Danish royal history.
Google MapsA good place to experience Nordic maritime culture firsthand.
Google MapsThe centerpiece of a day trip to Helsingør.
Google MapsFood and restaurants
- Keep lunch simple on your day trip. It’s easier to save dinner for a Copenhagen market or casual restaurant.
- A pastry and coffee between stops can make the day feel less rushed.
A good option after you return for sampling a few different foods.
Copenhagen Google MapsOne option for traditional Copenhagen food.
Copenhagen Google MapsHow to fit it in
If you’re staying in Copenhagen for at least 3 nights, a day trip lets you experience more of Denmark beyond the capital region.
Reality check
Use about 25–30 minutes as an initial estimate for the train from København H (Copenhagen Central Station) to Roskilde, then confirm the day’s trains on Rejseplanen. Plan 15–20 minutes to walk from Roskilde Station to the cathedral and another 15–20 minutes from the cathedral to the harbor museum. The museum’s official visitor information estimates a 20–25-minute walk directly from the station to the Viking Ship Museum; you can also check bus 203 for your visit date. For Helsingør, search for a København H–Helsingør train taking about 46 minutes, then add the 10-minute walk from the station to Kronborg given in the official visitor information. Don’t link the two cities on the same day.
09:00–16:00 is a sample planning window, not an actual train ticket. For Roskilde, allow 6–7 hours total: about 1 hour for the round-trip train, about 1 hour of walking between the station and sites, 1 hour at the cathedral, 1.5–2 hours at the museum, plus lunch and waiting time. Helsingør also fills a day: about 1.5 hours for the round-trip train, 2 hours at the castle, and 2–3 hours for the old town, lunch, and walking. In winter, visit the indoor museum first so you can make the 16:00 closing time. After you return, choose a market meal only if it’s open that day and the individual stalls’ last order times work for you.
Check the departure and return stations and date on Rejseplanen, then confirm the actual round-trip fare through DSB’s official ticket sales. If you already have a City Pass or Copenhagen Card, check the covered zones and whether the sites are included for that specific product; don’t assume admission is free based on the name alone. As of 2026-10-03, the Viking Ship Museum’s official price list shows regular adult admission at 165 DKK in summer and 130 DKK in winter. It says that buying a regular adult ticket online saves 10 DKK. Admission to the cathedral and Kronborg is separate. Add the round-trip train, admission to your chosen city’s sites, and lunch or café costs; include a boat experience only if it’s available in that season and offered as a separate ticket.
In winter, sunset comes early, so try not to leave a walk around the castle grounds until late afternoon.
If plans change
Stay in Copenhagen and shorten the day to one open Danish National Museum site and the area around your accommodation. If you’re already in Roskilde or Helsingør, first check Rejseplanen for official replacement transport and prioritize getting back.
If only the cathedral’s service hours don’t work, choose another museum or the old town in the same city. If all the main sites are closed, switch to an indoor Copenhagen plan before leaving. Don’t rush to book another day trip.
Small tip
You’ll likely enjoy the day more if you choose one nearby city, explore at a relaxed pace, and leave time for dinner in Copenhagen instead of visiting both.
Final check before departure
- Compare opening days at Roskilde Cathedral, the Viking Ship Museum, and Kronborg Castle, then choose one city.
- Save the reservation details and travel time you need for Kronborg in Helsingør.
- Check the last transport options back to your accommodation after returning to Copenhagen.
Visiting hours at Roskilde Cathedral may vary with services and events, so check its calendar first. The Viking Ship Museum is open every day of the year, but hours vary by season. If you choose both, visit them in the same city. Plan Helsingør as a separate day, and only if Kronborg’s official opening schedule works for your date.
