At a glance
- Check island rail connections against museum closure days first
- Confirm your three days in Copenhagen first, then schedule Roskilde or Louisiana in Humlebæk so the visits don’t overlap.
- If you add Odense, book a separate night there and include travel time from that accommodation to the airport the next day. Skip Odense if you have an early flight home on day five.
- If there’s major rail construction, stay longer in Copenhagen
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
After arrival, walk around Nyhavn and see the exterior of Amalienborg to adjust to the time difference. Add a canal boat only if the timing and weather work.
On day two, visit either Rosenborg Castle or the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK), then explore the city center. On day three, visit Tivoli and have a meal at a market. If Tivoli is closed, replace it with one indoor attraction that’s open, such as SMK.
Keep your Copenhagen accommodation and make a round trip to either Roskilde Cathedral and the Viking Ship Museum, or the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk.
Leave the morning for travel to the airport. If you’re going to Odense, add a separate overnight stay and don’t combine it with an early flight that day.
History and context
Denmark has a strong maritime culture and a history shaped by its control of the straits.
Copenhagen’s palaces and squares show the layout and order of a royal city.
Furniture, lighting, and everyday design are highlights to look out for on a trip to Denmark.
Places and meals
A classic spot for seeing Copenhagen’s canals and harbor atmosphere.
Google MapsA good place to see royal heritage alongside gardens.
Google MapsAn amusement park in the city center with a lovely evening atmosphere.
Google MapsFood and restaurants
- Smørrebrød makes a good lunch. Consider reservation-based restaurants and market-style options separately.
- Torvehallerne is a good place to sample a variety of foods in smaller portions.
- Dining out is expensive, so mix in some bakery and supermarket meals.
A good choice for a market-style lunch.
Copenhagen Google MapsA good choice for a smørrebrød meal. Check whether you need a reservation.
Copenhagen Google MapsHow to fit it in
You can make a full, rewarding trip with just two or three days in Copenhagen.
Reality check
Search separately from Copenhagen Central Station (Copenhagen H) to Roskilde and Humlebæk. Allow about 30 minutes by train to Roskilde, plus a walk to the museum; for Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, allow about 40 minutes by train to Humlebæk station, plus a 15-minute walk. Check actual trains, construction, and route tickets with DSB. Choose one destination for the day instead of adding Helsingør as well.
Half a day is enough for Nyhavn and the royal palace district, so use the remaining time for design shops and an evening at Tivoli.
For a two-person, four-night, five-day Copenhagen trip, budgeting DKK 1,200 per room per day and DKK 350 per person per day for food gives a total of DKK 8,300 for two people. This is a budgeting example, not a lodging quote. Transport and museums are extra. Tivoli admission and ride passes are different, so check the combined price. Check which special exhibitions are included at Louisiana and SMK as well.
Bike lanes can look like sidewalks, so check before stepping into one. Watch your footing when taking photos near the canal.
If plans change
If there’s major rail construction, stay longer in Copenhagen
If it’s very windy, swap coastal and cycling plans for indoor design spaces
Small tip
In this cycling city, pedestrians and cyclists follow different traffic patterns. Take care not to step into bike lanes.
Final check before departure
- Check time-slot tickets for Rosenborg and whether Tivoli is open on your visit date.
- Save the booking requirements and travel time for your selected nearby destination: Roskilde or Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk.
- Save the return connection from your nearby destination and the airport transfer for your departure day separately.
Rosenborg requires a timed-entry ticket booked in advance, and Tivoli’s opening dates and prices vary by season, so check its calendar. If your plans don’t work for both places, switch to a day exploring Copenhagen rather than squeezing in a day trip.
